Back in early March – we traded some e-mails between ourselves, Ferm i, and UoC – to get a feel for “what are your organizations doing with cloud computing”. Jim Dust had recently been talking with Jack Schmidt (Fermi) about cloud computing while out at Microsoft, and I had been talking with UoC (NSIT folks).

So we ended up with a meeting here at ANL (today) - UoC was able to attend, no one from Fermi was able to come on site for the meeting. As such, we ended up with a fairly casual brainstorming session on how the central IT groups (NSIT and CIS) could and should help move along cloud computing initiatives.

We were trying to brainstorm on areas where we could work together, or learn from other peoples experiences, etc. Get smarter on how the organizations were looking at low hanging fruit (easy things to move to the cloud), risk areas for going to the cloud, etc. Figuring out if there were any areas of collaboration for us – to work together; basically just trying to get a little bit smarter.

I will say that UoC did ask for us to not include the CIO’s in the f irst meeting – if you were coming, then they felt they needed to inv ite Greg, or Vicki from Fermi. They specifically wanted a meeting to bounce ideas around before going to the CIO level of discussion. Th is was sort of a step 0 sort of move. I thought we had talked about it casually a couple times in staff over the past couple of weeks – though sorry that would have left you unaware of it.
