Fwd: 2009 performance appraisals
For those of you who report to me, I'm sorry about the timing on this, but in case you didn't catch Rusty's e-mail, your performance appraisal is due on Friday. I'm going to scramble to get mine done tomorrow. As noted in the excerpt, this is a hard deadline, and it's not coming from me.
Because of some changes in how the overall system will work this year at the ALD level, October 23 will be a hard deadline. Please do push this button before October 23. == Craig

Dear MCS,
It's that time of the year again, for you to complete a Statement of Accomplishments (SOA) and draft performance appraisal for the review period of October 1, 2007, through September 30, 2008.
Statements of Accomplishment are a good opportunity for MCS supervisors and division management to get an update on the various projects in the division; the statements also serve as a vital link in the communications necessary for effective performance reviews. You can help us in this process by making your statement short (we encourage 3 pages or less), concise, and focused on your main accomplishments, including your role in collaborative efforts, joint projects, and both division and professional activities. Publications, software, seminars, talks, and white papers are all indications of "progress," so please try to provide a complete (but short) outline of what you did during the past year. Regular scientific staff members are required to submit information about proposals prepared and submitted. New scientific ideas, computational experiments, or software designed or completed are all suitable for discussion.
From now through October 23, the Performance Appraisal System (PAS) will be accessible with your ANL domain account via the link at http://inside.anl.gov . The web-based system is essentially the same as last year. In particular, there will be a "submit to supervisor" button, which releases control of the draft appraisal to your supervisor, after which time you will be unable to modify it. Because of some changes in how the overall system will work this year at the ALD level, October 23 will be a hard deadline. Please do push this button before October 23.
Between now and then, I ask you to please:
* review your position description and job hazard questionnaire for accuracy,
* upload your statement of accomplishments, preferably in txt or Word format,
* enter into Section 1B brief summaries and/or short sections of your accomplishments as they relate point-by-point to each of the items in your position description and the "Specific Goals and Responsibilities" as listed in Section 1A, and
* input draft FY10 individual specific goals into section 3B of your appraisal. These will be the goals that will appear next year.
Note that I am asking for two things: 1) the statement of accomplishments, which can be structured in any way you think best and is uploaded into the PA system, and 2) the draft performance appraisal, which is structured according to your position description and is entered by you into section 1B of the Performance Appraisal. After Oct 23 you will no longer have write permission for this and your supervisor will complete the performance appraisal by editing this section and assigning ratings. Since both parts count and will be read by your supervisor, there is no need to put everything in your SOA into Section 1B. Summaries and references to the SOA will be sufficient.
Note that attention to safety is an important part of your position description. One objective measurement of this available to your supervisor is whether you are up to date with your TMS training courses.
You received on Oct 1 email from HR on how to access the performance appraisal system. If you have any questions, please consult your supervisor.
Thanks, Rusty
