I was confused about this for a while when I was bootstraping the mpich. hwloc is a git submodule inside mpich, you need to separately git clone it into your local client, I remember there are several other submodule as well like src/izem which needs to be treated the same.

How exactly is src/hwloc to be checked out?  There is nothing about that at https://wiki.mpich.org/mpich/index.php/Getting_And_Building_MPICH .  Are up-to-date instructions available?
