Try running 'sudo update-alternatives --set mpi /usr/include/mpich2'. This tells the Ubuntu alternatives system to use mpich2 by default.

This problem usually comes from having a mix of openmpi and mpich
both installed on the same machine. Is that the case? You can search
for openmpi by running something like this from the command line:
dpkg -l | grep openmpi
