You should use MPI_THREAD_FUNNELED. MPI_THREAD_SINGLE should be used if your program has one thread total.

Is it possible with MPICH that MPI_Init_thread(&argc, &argv, MPI_THREAD_FUNNELED, &provided) sets provided to MPI_THREAD_SINGLE ? Thanks
