MPICH2 is the same project as regular old MPICH. The name was changed when moving to version 3 to reduce future confusion. I'm not sure what feature your application is using, but it should still be there in the latest versions. Regardless, what I'm trying to say is that while we can help you with problems in the latest few versions, we probably won't be able to help with such old versions. I do have mpich 3.1.2 installed but I specifically installed mpich2 on request of another application that uses it. The version of mpich2 available from the Ubuntu repository is 1.4.1. Have you tried updating to the latest version of MPICH? Our current version is 3.1.3. The version you are using is years old so we'll have a hard time helping you fix any issues.
