I know there are many at the lab who have struggled with efficient data transport of large data sets. While originally targeted at HPC environments, GridFTP is equally useful for user facilities and instruments that generate large data sets. Details below. (Thanks Raj) Paul Title: Tutorial on GridFTP, a secure data transfer protocol for high- performance distributed computing. Date: 9/15/2009 Time: 1-5 PM Building 401 Room A1100 Abstract: One of the foundational issues in HPC computing is the ability to move large (multi Gigabyte, and even Terabyte) data sets between sites. Simple file transfer mechanisms such as FTP and SCP are not sufficient either from the reliability or the performance perspective. Globus implementation of GridFTP is the most widely used Open Source production quality data mover available today. In the first half of this tutorial, we will cover GridFTP server administration. We will walk through the steps required for setting up and configuring GridFTP server on Linux/Unix machines. In the second half, we will explain the steps required for installing the commonly used GridFTP client ‘globus-url- copy’. We will demonstrate the usage of globus-url-copy and describe a set of best practices for obtaining maximal file transfer performance with GridFTP. We encourage the participants to bring laptop with access to Linux machines to get hands-on experience.
