Summary: Until further notice, the underfloor HALON systems covering the Main Computer Room and North computer rooms in bldg 221 will not automatically trigger. If HALON release into either underfloor area is desired, it will have to be manually released at the bottles on the service floor. The attached (crude) drawings show the coverage areas and the location of the manual releases.

Details: As part of a remodeling project, we are finally getting rid of the 221 Main Computer Room high voltage smoke detection system in A-134, and the ancient home-made HALON releasing panel that it connects to. All of the high voltage smoke detectors will be removed from the ceiling of the main computer room and connecting spaces. The smoke detectors connected to the regular 221 fire system will not be disturbed.

We are also installing a Vesda Laser Plus detector which will provide detection in the underfloor area of B-132, the old main computer room. Although we are retaining the underfloor HALON and delivery piping, it will not be triggered by this new VESDA detection system or anything else automatic. When this project is done, the HALON system covering B-132 will be electrical manual release only by a pull station that will be installed in A-134 where the current manual pull and releasing panel is.

The aforementioned ancient home-made releasing panel in A-134 unfortunately also provides HALON releasing functions for the North Computer Room. Since the North Computer Room high voltage smoke detection system is not being removed as part of this project, a brand new releasing panel is being installed where the old one is to retain the automatic releasing function for the North Computer Room HALON system.

So when the project is finished, nothing will have changed functionally for the North Computer Room, but there will be a new releasing panel to automatically release the HALON. The Main Computer Room function will have changed in that it will no longer have an automatic release, but will have VESDA underfloor detection so that you will have a good idea of what’s going on down there, and that information could be used in the manual release decision process.

This job is expected to take less than a week. There are 3 impairment tags associated with this work. One is for the disablement of the 4 monitor modules that monitor both the north and main computer room high voltage systems, one is for the temporary de-energization of the North Computer Room high voltage system while rewiring is taking place, and the third is a reminder that only hand HALON release is possible for both the Main and North computer room systems (and that the electric actuators are removed from the bottles). All three tags are on the 221 fire panel.
