Team, As we approach our April meetings in Chattanooga, I'd like to do a little homework to render the ancillary meeting with industry (CT Roadmapping meeting hosted by David Bernholdt) as useful as possible. David, Jim and I have spoken and we've concluded that the best way to get the dialog rolling with industry is to identify a single "blue sky" experiment that would be valuable to you in developing and/or validating your code or model. That is, if you could devise a measurement, where there were no limits on the variables that could be observed, what experiment would you design or request from an experimental team? As an example, if I were the fuels IPSC leader, perhaps I would say "I would like a full 3D characterization of a pin irradiated in a reactor or other radiation inducing device, taking care to accurately measure not only pin dimensions, but also temperature, neutron flux, isotope depletion and accretion, gap thickness, etc. etc. etc. at X positions on the pin as a function of time." This exercise will, by design, produce specificity that is certainly unobtainable. But it will draw out the experimentalists to tell us what they can do. (We've struggled with that goal thus far.) And it may spawn some creative ideas about how they might obtain information they have never considered before. I note that in the case of the fuels IPSC, this information may already exist from the separate effects experiments meeting Cetin hosted about a year ago. As far as I am aware, no similar forum has been hosted for the other IPSCs. As always, I remain hypersensitive to the risk of misusing your time. For that reason, I suggest that I have a phone conversation with each germane member of the PMT to solicit this information. If you agree, I will "interview" each of you separately and capture your thoughts in a single page (or maybe even a paragraph) and send back to you for review. In this way, I am hoping this will require less than 30 minutes of your time. I would like to have these phone conversations next week if possible.
