It's pretty old and doesn't apply cleanly, but see attached. We use a similar idea (working) in Firedrake (see https://github.com/firedrakeproject/firedrake/blob/master/firedrake/matrix_f...) That latter algorithm has had more testing. Thanks, Lawrence
