The TSM server is a 7383ECU The Syslog server is a 7158EBU The 7383ECU comes with 2x750watt power supplies and a m5110 with 512mb of flash backed cache:) The 7158EBU comes with an m5110 with 512mb of flash backed cache, I included the 1 extra power supply separately. IBM is sneaky on the smart buy configs, maybe they want everyone to buy stuff they don't need. Jesus. Could they have made it more obtuse? And after cross referencing the 5110 redbook I see the flash based caches don't need BBU since they use NAND and not DRAM. We'd still want one more controller for the TSM server since each 5110 can only handle 8 drives (if I read that products redbook properly), right? You only need one HBA to drive all 32 drive slots. They are connected in a cascaded fashion. This is on page 52 of the user manual at: http://download.boulder.ibm.com/ibmdl/pub/systems/support/system_x_pdf/00v97... The thing I've always liked about IBM is almost everything is documented. However, when you document so much fluffy stuff it is really hard to find the important things. The thing I'm not sure about is do we really only need one redundant fan kit? What we need is N+1, but since the server is capable of N+N I'm not sure if we actually need enough fan kits to fill all the extra slots to get the baseboard controller to act in a redundant way. I just added one kit, and I think if we wind up without redundancy we can order the 2 or 3 more $60 redundant kits. We may want to run external drives off this thing in the future, but I think we can cross that bridge when we get to it. If and when we order some supermicro storage to hang off this thing we can order a raid controller from LSI. I don't want to try hanging one off the IBM raid controller because IBM could have hobbled it in some way. I checked and our nightly backup churn is fairly low to lal. I think the 6TB of near line disk should be enough for our current incremental size. The add on warranty I selected has hard drive retention on this server, so it might be worthwhile to use the ibm disk internally until we find a backup use that needs a larger disk pool. It will make warranty replacement easy on us in the future. I wish we could have discussed this in person, I'm currently taking breaks between paragraphs to wipe the goo out of my eyes so I can see :( Apparently by the time the pink eye got to me it became resistant to antibiotics, so they have me on some supercharged flouro-something based eye drops.
