Your code runs just fine using latest MPICH 3.1 in my Mac laptop when using 2 processes. My guess is that you executed your program with just one process instead of two. Please add a check to make sure your are using nprocs >= 2 (i.e, that the size of MPI_COMM_WORLD is at least two).
