I'm certainly happy removing these older modules. shm was originally intended as a latency test vehicle - absolutely minimum latency, to help track down excessive memory references, badly placed structure members, etc. There is also a difference in the polling model. Note that when someone checks out an older version from the SVN repository, these will still be available. They'll just not be present at the head of the trunk.
Btw, does shm provide something ssm doesn't?
