PETSc users,
As some of you may be aware, we recently lost our developer
Kris Buschelman due to budget constraints. He will be missed. Rest assured
we will continue to be developing PETSc, just a little slower.
Our single most important way of maintaining PETSc funding is to
demonstrate that PETSc is a useful tool for those involved in
scientific computation. To assist us, please let us know of any recent
publications that relied on PETSc computations that are not listed at

We are pleased to announce the release of the PETSc 2.2.0 parallel
software libraries for the implicit solution of PDEs and related
problems.
There is one major change. The SLES component is now GONE, all of its
functionality can be obtained through the KSP object. See

for a list of changes in this release.
Though we still support the editing of $PETSC_DIR/bmake/$PETSC_ARCH/ files
for installing PETSc, we now also have a (semi) automatic configuration
tool that automatically sets up the configuration files: see

PETSc users,
We are preparing our next PETSc release. In the next release we are
including a new tool config/configure.py that is intended to simplify
the installation of PETSc. It can determine the location of BLAS/LAPACK,
MPI and various other packages and also determine which options to use
for your compilers.
We would appreciate if as many people as possible could test this new
tool before our next release. All you need to do is
1) get the file ftp://ftp.mcs.anl.gov/pub/petsc/.petsc-dev.tar.gz
2) gunzip -c .petsc.tar.gz | tar -xof -
3) cd petsc
4) csh/tcsh: unsetenv PETSC_DIR
sh/bash: unset PETSC_DIR
5) ./config/configure.py
6) email petsc-maint(a)mcs.anl.gov the file configure.log
We will fix all the problems that come up during these runs; this
may make it quicker for your installs in the future.
If you are using the development version of PETSc you need only do
1) bk pull ; cd python/BuildSystem; bk pull
to update your source code, instead of getting the tar file.

You can run config/configure.py --help to get a list of all options
--with-mpi=0 indicates you do not have an MPI installed
--with-gnu-compilers=0 you do NOT wish to use the gnu compilers
--with-vendor-compilers=0 you do not wish to use the vendor compilers
--with-fc=0 you do not want a Fortran compiler
--with-cxx=0 you do not want a C++ compiler

SLEPc: Scalable Library for Eigenvalue Problem Computations

We are pleased to announce the release of SLEPc 2.1.5, a parallel
software library for the solution of large sparse eigenvalue problems on
parallel computers. It can be used for the solution of problems
formulated in either standard or generalized form, both Hermitian and
non-Hermitian, with either real or complex arithmetic.
SLEPc is built on top of PETSc, the Portable Extensible Toolkit for
Scientific Computation (http://www.mcs.anl.gov/petsc) It can be
considered an extension of PETSc providing all the functionality
necessary for the solution of eigenvalue problems. SLEPc includes
several eigensolvers as well as interfaces to other libraries such as
ARPACK. It also provides built-in support for spectral transformations
such as shift-and-invert.
This software should be considered as part of an ongoing project and we
plan to continue its improvement by adding more solvers and tools.
