All,
We've been working on migrating away from the old divisional web servers
for some time, and we've reached a point where security concerns are
driving the need to get this move in place. We've come up with a plan
for handling users' personal webspace in their unix home directories
(those of you with www-unix URLS for your home page). Some of you may
have noticed a symlink added to your homedir called "web" that points to
an nfs directory. This is an rsync'd copy of your public_html directory
that lives locally on the webserver. If you'd like to see what it looks
like, visit http://www-dev.mcs.anl.gov/~<username> from onsite or VPN.
Some advantages to this new setup are:
* local disk on the webserver = fast
* no more ugly www-unix or www-new urls (redirects will point to the
new url in case you have old links hanging around)
* php5 available with .php5 file extensions
* migration serves as a reminder to cleanup/update your personal
webspace :)
We're aiming for a deadline of *August 1st* to cut over all users. The
steps to migration being:
1. final rsync of data
2. move old public_html out of the way
3. move "web" symlink to public_html

systems(a)mcs.anl.gov and we'll set it up.
We will deal with www-fp homepages in August.
