Hello all, We're bringing in IBM for 4 days to burn off a few consulting dollars by teaching us all about GPFS. It'll be a decent mix of relatively basic stuff (but at a low level) and complicated troubleshooting. I remember e-mailing about this quite a while ago, and several MCS/CI people were interested. [CELS Sysadmins] Backups

Backups are ... um .. back up ... after a fashion ... I have about 400GB available on a disk on lal for backups, archiving will go directly to tape. Restores should be available as well. 400GB is not enough to back up our entire environment, but most of the huge hogs are not currently backing up; homes, cosmea, kbt, are all still not backing up. We usually push just shy of 1TB / night, although since we haven't run backups in 6 days that number is going to be higher, but since many of the heavy hitters were offline much of that time I don't think it will be too bad. I've locked storage.kbt.mcs.anl.gov at the tsm server just in case. If the disk fills then backups will start going right to tape and then they will pile up like LaGuardia in the 80s. John V knows how to deal with that. I fired up a backup on owney, just to see some bits fly and it seems to be going just fine. I have some processes running that are formatting more disk but it takes a freaking long time to do it, I will be online in the morning for a while and I will add disk as it finishes formatting ... tomorrow night should make it possible to back up more stuff, but I want to hold off on sto01 for now until we get some more disk available, we are snapshotting it and we have the mercury and wildcat backups from before the move, so I'm not too too too worried ... Hey, check it out, while I was talking to you another 100GB finished formatting, so now we have 500GB available on disk. Hello, On FRIDAY, October 16th, (yes, this Friday) we are decommissioning the server named wildcat. As we speak we are finishing the process of migrating the data stored there to the new production fileservers. What this means to you is that the files in the shares you mount from wildcat, "common", "Sharing" "nt-homes001", etc. will accessed in ways slightly different from how you are doing it now. To the best of our ability access will be as similar to how you are used to accessing them as possible. We realize that this is going to be pretty disruptive, we will do all that we can to minimize the pain, rending of garments and woe. On Monday we will be assisting you all with getting things sane, we appreciate your patience with this. The details are not that important right now, we will be sending out a note and putting up a wiki page with explicit instructions, but in broad terms when the process is complete there will be two main differences: You will find a new directory in your unixhome/<username> directory called "wildcat-files" that should contain all the files from nt- homes01/<username> The "Sharing" directory can be found within the "common" share and "common" should be mounted from unixhome, thus: Finder -> Go -> Connect to Server -> enter the following: smb://unixhome.mcs.anl.gov/common It will prompt you for your username and password, use the same "windows" password you do to mount the shares now. Just to clarify, since some of you have been asking. If you have a need to be in there, then yes, you are authorized. But while it's a work zone, we want to limit who has access in there as a safety measure.
