Here is what happened: I was working on routing policy at MREN yesterday and due to route-map nuances on the E1200, a filter failed to reject routes and instead announced them to peers. It is theorized, because I don't actually have a record of this because it was not done by a user, that this line was installed in the configuration automatically: mls rate-limit unicast cef receive 10000 100 This was a defensive maneuver to keep the box from falling over while it software switched packets. This effectively reduced the number of packets per second that can be processed to 10K instead of the default unlimited (or until we run out of steam). Based on Dan's poking, the ARP traffic alone for vlan 741 exceeds the burst threshold of 100 at a time, meaning that lots of traffic was dropped. As for why only certain destinations were affected, it was all tied to the prefixes that were SW switched, which is cisco IOS magic. Suffice to say, it selected poorly for our case. Anything that was software selected for forwarding and crossed the threshold was dropped. The following actions will be taken: 1. attempt to identify exactly what caused the line to be inserted (I am going to go with a cisco case on this one) 2. attempt to prevent insertion of that line again 3. create an alarm on the solarwinds infrastructure to alert us when this happens so it can be reversed I apologize for the delay in getting this resolved. It was a switching problem that happened, with the exception of the 6 lines above, silently. I am sure I was the root cause, but unfortunately it was not a direct cause problem.
