So it turns out we were getting correctable memory errors in this server for some time. Our normal monitoring didn't catch it, even though these messages were going to syslog. I assume the system panic happened due to an uncorrectable bit error. I would think the superdoctor software may have, and would definitely catch bad power supplies and fans, so I plan on getting that up and running, and adding a rule to our syslog server for EDAC errors. We need to take that server down soon to replace the bad dimm. I'll look around and see if I can find a spare on hand. We would need 30 minutes of downtime. I'll formulate a plan to do this with the least disruption. We can take a look at hot migrating the VMs that are the most visible, but I would like to test that strategy first.
