Either Vinnie forgot to give me the sheet saying I was chosen for this field trip today or it totally slipped my mind. Either is possible at this point. I am going to leave at 10:00, because I have to stop at home first before I go to the school, then after we get back from the field trip, I will work the rest of my day from there. [CELS Sysadmins] Migrating Production Userbase

I've finally gotten the new production userbase server, userbase.cels.anl.gov, configured well enough to test that all my recent changes work as they do on the new staging server. Now all that's left is to move to it as the new production server. With the database optimizations I've made to this release, it looks like we can finally split the database off from the userbase server. So my migration plan is this: 1) Allow the new server to connect to the UB databases on allyourbase 2) Point the new server to use allyourbase for UB databases 3) Test that at the very least the new admin, sovereign.cels.anl.gov, behaves normally and acceptably 4) Move the frontend CNAMEs - accounts.mcs.anl.gov, accounts.jlse.anl.gov, etc - over to the new server - The nginx proxy server uses the CNAME to proxy to so this should be sufficient - Since there are no model changes, both codebases - old and new - should be able to serve concurrently since they'll be using the same databases 5) Once sufficient time has passed, put up a static maintenance page on the new server 6) Shutdown the database on allyourbase and snapshot all the databases 7) Import the databases on coredb and update UB to use coredb as the SQL server 8) Remove static maintenance page 9) SUCCESS! How does this plan look to everyone. Any gotchas that stand out to anyone?

No support and/or security patches whatsoever will be provided by Microsoft following this date. The Department of Energy and the Laboratory expect all instances of Windows Server 2003 to be upgraded to a supported OS platform or taken OFF THE NETWORK/Firewalled no later than July 14th, 2015. As with the Windows XP EOL project, DOE will require the Laboratory to follow rigorous reporting standards as the date approaches. Understanding that there are cases where turning off or upgrading the server is not feasible, the following requirements for each W2003 OS remaining instance must be met: 1. Identify the named "accountable" person for each server instance 2. Identify the named "accountable" ITAB member for the server instance 3. A non-trivial amount of business and technical justification 4. A detailed list of risk mitigations to be put in place (network/access restrictions, etc.) 5. An expected "decommissioned" date 6. Regular status updates (monthly) The Cyber-Security Office has included a list of servers (below) that appear to be Windows 2003 based on scanning compilation results over the past several months. However, this is list is only a rough starting point based upon network OS fingering printing of those systems on the network. As the IT representative for your ALDship, we are expecting you will take the lead on this project in working with your divisions and IT leads. A Windows 2003 reporting template has been uploaded into each division folder within the EOL reporting directory located here: https://anl.box.com/s/a0lsujocm0yxxq4vzn7j Please work with your divisions to provide updated numbers, plans, and next steps via the Box reporting file by May 29th.
