[CELS Sysadmins] public or private IPs for HPC cluster compute nodes?

Hi Sysadmins, I'm curious of your opinions of whether compute nodes in an HPC cluster need public IP addresses or whether private IPs suffice. Traditionally in MCS, compute nodes clusters have always had public IPs, but clusters elsewhere almost always have private IPs. In my experience, the computes I've dealt with really don't need to speak to anything external. They can use internal, cluster servers for NTP, LDAP, etc. The furthest out they typically have to go is to an external license server, but even for that, one can setup a proxy server on a cluster server. In principle, users' jobs on the compute nodes might need to access external servers (I've seen some bio codes like the MG-RAST stuff which talks to an external SQL database server, for example), but that perhaps could be handled by doing NAT somewhere within the cluster. I can't think of any good reason why an external system would ever need to contact one of the compute nodes for a service. Some viz apps (eg, ParaView), I believe can run on a desktop (for example) and talk to remote renderers and data readers running on compute nodes, but I think even that can be handled by (admittedly complicated) SSH tunneling through cluster login nodes with public IPs, no? Am I not thinking of something? Do you know of any examples of cluster jobs that require public IPs on the compute nodes?
