URGENT: rename group "root" to "xroot"

TL;DR Urgent request to remove or rename the LDAP group named "root". All, We've discussed renaming (or removing completely) the group named "root" that exists in the MCS ldap server. Group root has gid 0. I propose renaming it "xroot" for a week or two and then removing it from the system altogether. We've discussed this in the past and come to this same general course - it needs to go. I'm asking for it now-ish as I'm trying to migrate all of IGSB's access and other controls to be group based and not enumerated list of users based. Recall that Ti has recently added into ldap the "sudoers" group which is intended to be all the active sysadmins that should have root level privileges anywhere. The issue at hand is various files (the one I'm hitting is pam_access's config file) allow a word to be either a user or a group. I have entries in my access.conf that are intended to control from where the user root can and can't login - but I hunter am getting these same restrictions because "hunter" is a member of the group "root" which also matches. Working from home

Got cleared to work from home until the end of the month, then clear to return to the lab physically starting 10/1. I'll be reachable via cell (630-863-6665), email, IM, etc. from here on out. I'll be working from home today, Michelle has an appointment creating a scheduling issue, and I have apparently lost a crown, so I'm not my usual most cheery self today. I'm hoping the dentist gets me in today, but I have a set appointment for tomorrow, so if no one cancels, it will be the same deal tomorrow.. Kinda like flying standby.. Luckily, the crown that goes on top of my head is still around, so I am still king of my world. I dunno why people call it a tiara..

new LCRC cluster

Hi Admins, Just as an FYI, LCRC has purchased a new cluster, to add to and eventually replace fusion. Like fusion and jazz before it, it will be a good, old, commodity cluster w/ mostly off the shelf components (ie, nothing crazy like BG, SiCortex or the Cray), although the nodes will have custom enclosures (Appro GreenBlade enclosures, http://www.appro.com/products/servers/greenblade_intel/ ). Node count is ~308, similar to fusion and jazz. There will be 7 racks that will be installed between the current fusion compute node racks (the shallow iDataPlex racks) and the System racks, pretty much using up all the free floorspace between the two groups (there'll be a narrow, < 2' gap between the Systems racks and the new cluster, since one of the 7 racks--the one holding a large IB switch--will be one of the wide APC racks; the rest are standard 2' width APC racks). Delivery is expected on the 14th (a week from this coming Fri), with installation (basically plugging all the network cables back in) to be completed during the following week, so expect things in the Core to be busy that week near fusion & the Systems racks. There are no plans as of yet to decommision anything on fusion, so all its racks will still be around for the foreseeable future. BTW, the name of the new cluster is "blues". John
