FlexLM magic

I have been told to change our flexlm server so that another department's machine is also covered by a particular license. This department thinks I can restrict the usage of this license to a particular user on that machine. I have not been able to find documentation on how this might be accomplished. In my mind, flexlm would have to know something about authentication (eg radius or PAM). I'm fairly certain our instance of flexlm doesn't know anything about authentication. My guess this might be a fairly complicated process if at all possible. My inclination is that this should be handled by moving the license over to a machine admined by that department and put the binaries in a permission protected directory for the user. That might be kludgey and problematic if there are other users on the system using the same program. Does anyone have any experience at limiting flexlm licensed programs to specific people? I have to go to Fidelity in Orland at 1:00 to meet with them re: Cindy's retirement and the ANL roll over of the Prudential stuff. I will just go home from there and work the rest of the day from my house with a glass of wine, considering I don't expect this to go the way I would like it too! T.

So, I've been trying to work from a really flaky hotel net, and getting constantly dropped or badly lagged. Mosh (http://mosh.mit.edu) looks like it would be a really good solution for this. The basic authentication story is that it uses ssh for bootstrapping, and then each session starts up a UDP speaking daemon authenticated with a one time private key (communicated to the client via the ssh bootstrap). Details are here: http://mosh.mit.edu/#faq At the same time, since most of my connections are made via [np]amby, I wanted to query the group before starting to use this on one of our admin bastions. As a side note, this would also potentially require UDP conduits. Opinions? -nld

Fish Bowl going away

Just a heads up that the control room aka fishbowl will be repurposed into a showroom for ALCF over the coming weeks. The room will have carpeted tiles installed, the existing furniture will come out, and a video wall will get installed. It won't be usable as a hacking area once the furniture comes out. -- Craig
