Ellis Ave. This talk will be broadcast via Adobe Connect (see below) Statistical Learning Machines for Protein Structure Prediction in the Era of High-Throughput Sequencing Abstract: If we know the primary sequence of a protein, can we predict its 3D structure by computational methods? This is one of the most important and challenging problems in computational molecular biology and has tremendous implications for the understanding of life process, diseases and drug discovery. Depending on whether or not there is one solved structure similar to the protein sequence under consideration, computational methods for protein folding can be classified into two categories: template-based and template-free modeling. The former uses similar solved structures as templates to predict the structure of a protein while the latter does not. This talk will demonstrate how statistical learning methods especially probabilistic graphical models can be applied to address some fundamental challenges facing template-based and template-free protein folding by taking advantage of high-throughput sequencing and protein structure initiatives. Mathematics and Computer Science Division Speaker: Andres Alarcon-Ramierz, Postdoc Interviewee Host: Tom Peterka Date: Thursday, November 14, 2013 Time: 10:30am – 11:30am Location: Argonne National Laboratory, Building 240, Seminar Room 4301 Title: An Integrated Methodology for Object Tracking Applications under Illumination Changes Abstract Video Object Tracking is currently an active area of research in several images processing applications suchlike traffic controlling, video compression, surveillance, human-computer interaction, and video editing. Object tracking algorithms strive to detect and track a determined moving object through a sequence of images. Regularly, these object tracking algorithms use and correlate many pre-processing tasks, such as motion estimation and image segmentation. However, researchers struggle with several challenging problems like changes in illumination in the scene, severe occlusion, or abrupt changes in object motion which affect the object tracking task. Existing object tracking algorithms are used successfully to track a moving object through a sequence of images with a low grade of complexity. Meaning by low grade of complexity the spatial or temporal smoothness presented by a given set of images which causes that a moving object to be easily detected. Additionally, the presence of non-uniform illumination in a sequence of images, which is a phenomenon commonly presented in outdoor and indoor environments, is rarely dealt by existing algorithms. Therefore, there exists the need to explore a new methodology which tackles this problem. The primary contribution of this work is a methodology to deal with object tracking tasks in sequence of frames exposed to non-uniform illumination conditions.
