Many of the applications have a specific structure which can be exploited in most of the cases and allow for an efficient numerical simulation. These structural characteristics should be taken care of in the context of mathematical optimization, where one wants to minimize/maximize a certain objective functional based upon the simulation. In particular, instead of considering general-purpose NLP solvers we pursue the idea to develop optimization algorithms for some classes of problems that exploit the underlying structure but are still as general as possible. A focus in this talk will be an ongoing project concerning geothermal simulation and one-shot optimization. Here, the underlying simulation is based on underground flows in porous media that can be controlled by the positioning of the inlets and outlets for the fluid. Therefore, a two-phase flow is solved using a splitting method that solves the pressure equation and the saturation equation in an alternating fashion. The resulting numerical simulation code can be regarded as a slowly converging fixed point iteration for the physical quantities such as pressure and saturation. Hence, we consider a one-shot optimization strategy for achieving the point-wise maximal temperature at one outlet that is computed by solving the heat equation for stationary phase saturations and fluid velocities.

Ellis Ave. This talk will be broadcast via Adobe Connect (see below) Statistical Learning Machines for Protein Structure Prediction in the Era of High-Throughput Sequencing Abstract: If we know the primary sequence of a protein, can we predict its 3D structure by computational methods? This is one of the most important and challenging problems in computational molecular biology and has tremendous implications for the understanding of life process, diseases and drug discovery. Depending on whether or not there is one solved structure similar to the protein sequence under consideration, computational methods for protein folding can be classified into two categories: template-based and template-free modeling. The former uses similar solved structures as templates to predict the structure of a protein while the latter does not. This talk will demonstrate how statistical learning methods especially probabilistic graphical models can be applied to address some fundamental challenges facing template-based and template-free protein folding by taking advantage of high-throughput sequencing and protein structure initiatives. Need a little help understanding roles in IHW

I'm noticing some of the notifications being generated are going to an odd group of people, IMHO, so I wanted to see how the IHW groups were set up, since it's driven from there. I'm asking here to see if there's some knowledge here before I bug CIS. We've got a hierarchy in the groups, but it doesn't look like there's any inheritance going on. So, for instance, people in ANL:MCS are not necessarily in ANL:MCS:Systems, and so on. I'm guessing inheritance is in place for things like IHW editing permissions, since some of these groups are unpopulated. But in other cases like e-mail notices they are not in place. So, for instance, a user's laptop triggered an outbound scanner alert. For whatever reason, that machine is listed as such: Network Information: The IP, 140.221.11.83, was found in Networking database CSPR:stace,rackow ITAdmins:tstanton Subnet: 140.221.10.0/23 Division: ANL:MCS:Systems:Support VLAN: 410 Color: Orange Description: MCS Desktop Network Enclave: Which means the people notified were the primary and secondary CSPR, plus Tina. That seems wrong to me. Also, is that designation correct? Does "desktop net" == "ANL:MCS:Systems:Support"? I apologize if this was covered before and I'm forgetting why, in which case just prod this old man's memory. Right now, I see the following for CSPR and IT Admin roles (CSPR for ANL:MCS, IT Admin for all underneath). Some obvious changes are needed (removing raffenet, for example), but looking for insight before I just start diving in and changing things. Mathematics and Computer Science Division Speaker: Dr. Krishna Palem, Professor from Rice University Host: Marc Snir <snir(a)anl.gov<mailto:[email protected]>> Date: January 31, 2014 Time: 10:00 AM - 11:00 AM Location: Argonne National Laboratory, Building 240, Conference Rooms 1404 & 1405 Ten Years of Building Broken Chips Inexact design for ultra-energy-efficient platform architectures and embedded systems Abstract: Well over a decade ago, many believed that an engine of growth driving the semiconductor and computing industries, captured nicely by Gordon Moore’s remarkable prophecy (Moore’s law), was speeding towards a dangerous cliff-edge. When faced with this issue, I decided to consider a different approach back in 2002—one which suggested falling off the metaphorical cliff as a design choice, but in a controlled manner. This resulted in devices, circuits and architectures that switch and produce bits of information that deviate from the intended ``correct’’ specification—the results would be approximate or inexact. Despite being inexact by trading accuracy away, these hardware designs have been shown to be significantly more efficient in the energy they consume, their speed of execution, and physical area needs. This in turn makes them attractive for a range of large-scale data-centric applications such as analytics, search, learning and climate modeling, as well as embedded applications involving video and audio. In this talk, I will start with our beginnings with inexactness from 2002—one that Technology Review labeled as being heretical in their TR10 citation—and give an overview of a range of ideas that our group as well as other groups around the world have been developing since. I will also outline opportunities for applying inexact design in the context of realizing extremely energy-efficient platform architectures including memory systems, for computing with big data at one extreme, and battery-constrained embedded systems with strong ties to neural processing at the other. We intend to use this talk as a basis for developing partnerships to collaboratively help grow this exciting frontier in inexact hardware, and eventually software systems. Bio: Krishna V. Palem is the Ken and Audrey Kennedy Professor at Rice University with appointments in Computer Science, in Electrical and Computer Engineering and in Statistics. In the past, he founded and directed the NTU-Rice Institute on Sustainable and Applied Infodynamics (ISAID), and is a scholar in the Baker Institute for Public Policy. He was a Moore Distinguished Faculty Fellow at Caltech in 2006-2007, and a Schonbrunn Fellow at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem in 1999, where he was recognized for excellence in teaching. His advisee Suren Talla was awarded the Janet Fabri Prize for outstanding dissertation in 2001, and his related work on the foundations of architecture assembly for designing reconfigurable embedded SoC architectures, developed at Proceler Inc. which he co-founded as a CTO, was a nominee on 2002 for the Analysts choice awards as one of the four outstanding technologies. A decade ago, he pioneered a novel technology entitled Probabilistic CMOS (PCMOS) for enabling ultra low-energy computing, with his students. In this area, his student Lakshmi Chakrapani's research was recognized through an outstanding dissertation award by Sigma Xi in 2008. PCMOS has also been recognized by a best-paper award at the IEEE-ACM CASES 2006 conference in Seoul, as one of the ten technologies 'likely to change the way we live' by MIT's Technology Review in 2008, and as one of the seven 'emerging world changing technologies' by IEEE as part of its 125th anniversary celebrations in 2009 . Broadly, he has led efforts internationally in the area of embedded systems and their compiler optimizations, for which he has been named a Fellow of the IEEE, the ACM and AAAS. In 2012, Forbes (India) ranked him second on the list of eighteen scientists who are ``..some of the finest minds of Indian origin.” He is the recipient of the 2008 W. Wallace McDowell Award, IEEE Computer Society's highest technical award and one of computing's most prestigious individual honors.

Re: Mail.app Issue

I made some adjustments off-hours that may help to alleviate this particular issue. We are allowing the exchange server(s) to bypass the reflexive rules and deliver directly to the clients with a static set of rules. This is applied to the following nets: Systems (140.221.13.0/25) DesktopNet (140.221.10.0/23) LCF Desktop (140.221.3.0/24) Hopefully this helps alleviate the issues a bit and helps us move forward. Also, I sat in on an exchange discussion today and learned a couple things that may help you move forward on a couple of other areas. Mail.app is not capable of supporting cached mode for exchange mailboxes. Beyond a mailbox of ~10GB, it might not matter much, however, for "normal" mailboxes, caching speeds up lots of tasks and provides insulation from network anomalies. Additionally, mail.app doesn't support the archived model of mail (not quite sure what that means). The real help here is in pushing users to some kind of model where they use a client that can help make their lives easier. I realize that this is a hard sell for the anti-microsoft crowd as well as those who want to have a single client to rule them all. As someone who tried to integrate two mailboxes into outlook, I can tell you that there are some growing pains. Regardless, user experience on mail.app will likely never be grand, so there is that.
