Happy New Year

As the year comes to an end, I want to wish to the MCS family happy holidays and a happy new year. I thank all of you for the successes MCS had in the last year: Our funding is good; we started several large projects (M2ACS, Argo), and continued successfully with CESAR and other projects. We are heavily involved with planning exascale activities and defining new research directions for ASCR. We celebrated this year multiple awards and multiple hires and promotions Franck Cappello was hired as senior computer scientist Mihai Anitescu was promoted to senior mathematician Ravi Madduri, Raj Kettimuru and J.-P. Navarro were promoted to RD4 Chris Henry and Kamil Iskra were promoted to RD3 And, hot off the press, Narayan Desai was just promoted to RD4 -- Please join me in congratulating Narayan. We have two weeks to rest on our laurels and prepare for the work waiting for us next year: I expect that next year will see significant activities that will reboot the exascale initiative and put it on a stronger footing; many of us will be involved in these activities. The lab will need to develop a solid data plan, with MCS defining the research content of this plan, and identifying the needed collaborations with other divisions and outside the lab. We shall start next year a focused effort to diversify our funding -- both to reduce our dependency on ASCR funding and to identify funding sources that better match the span of activities that MCS personnel is interested to pursue. We shall start a systematic review of our internal processes, in order to identify ways to improve them. And, of course, we shall continue to improve the quality and impact of our research, seeking new problems and applications. Please enjoy, with family and friends, the coming break; see you all in January 2014. There will be much to discuss at our upcoming conference, including: setting up a campus data service sharing data with collaborators, wherever they may be integrating campus computing with the cloud data management services for genomics researchers The conference will take place April 15-17, 2014, at Argonne National Laboratory near Chicago, and offer two-plus days of presentations, tutorials, and networking opportunities.
