Mailing list changes

The MCS operations meeting on Monday yielded some changes in our mailing lists Marc wanted me to implement. I'm putting them through, but listing them here so everyone knows. * mcs(a)mcs.anl.gov is going away. The alias will point to announce(a)mcs.anl.gov. * announce(a)mcs.anl.gov is made up of mcs-staff(a)mcs.anl.gov (aka staff(a)mcs.anl.gov) plus anyone who chooses to subscribe to it. * mcs-staff is made up of staff-auto@mcs (an automatically generated list of anyone with an MCS appointments), and staff-managed@mcs (a manually managed list of people (by Pat/Tamra) who have multiple appointments and thus aren't caught in the first list). * mcs-visitors is gone. Members were sent pointers to announce@mcs and seminars@mcs to subscribe to if they wish. * seminars had staff(a)mcs.anl.gov added as a subscriber, and had everyone currently on staff(a)mcs.anl.gov unsubscribed. If you get mail from someone who's staff wondering why they can't unsubscribe from seminars@mcs, it would be because they're on staff and can't unsubscribe from that. If it's a real problem for them, we can show them how to filter them (or do it for them). * I'm also working on automating the population of supervisors@mcs based on info I'll get from Pat. More on that once I get it in place. -- Craig

Reminder: Argonne username change happening this weekend.

Hi. As previously announced via e-mail on July 1, your Argonne username is going to be changed on July 22nd. It will be changed to match your MCS username, in anticipation of MCS switching to Argonne accounts later this year. See the various announcements at http://mcs.anl.gov/systemsblog for details if you've forgotten or need further details on the bigger picture. Sometime between 7PM Sunday July 21 and 7AM Monday July 22 your Argonne account will be renamed. Once that rename is complete, you will stop using the username core-sysadmins-anl and begin using the username core-sysadmins. At this point, your Argonne and MCS usernames now match. The next step to making this switch seamless is to take the opportunity to make sure your passwords are reset and matched. We normally encourage you to use different passwords for different services, but since these are merging into a single service, we're okay with them being the same. On Monday, you should reset both your MCS and Argonne passwords to something new. The reason we encourage this is to bring to your attention any locations where you may have a saved or cached credential that you've forgotten about, since it will start failing or showing errors when the old password stops working. Common areas that you'll have saved credentials are: * E-Mail and Calendar (MCS credentials) * Authenticated Wireless (ANL credentials) * Jabber (ANL credentials) And you may have these credentials stored on multiple devices. So by setting a new password, you'll highlight the ones you'll need to change any time your password changes, which from this point forward will be at least once every 6 months. The 6 month countdown begins any time you change your password, so you'll start a fresh six month cycle on Monday, which will take you through the new year. To change your Argonne password, visit https://mypassword.anl.gov. Take advantage of the opportunity to set up security questions and answers, so you'll be able to reset your password should you forget it without having to rely on someone else to do it for you. To change your MCS password, visit https://accounts.mcs.anl.gov, login, and choose "Set Password" after the account name in the "Account Information" section of the page. This won't change any e-mail addresses. Anything that currently works for you will continue to work, including in the domains @mcs.anl.gov, @anl.gov, @alcf.anl.gov, etc. If, for some reason, you really don't want to use your current MCS username as your Argonne username, let us know ASAP and we'll see what options are available to you. Likewise, if you have any questions, please feel free to contact me or send a note to systems(a)mcs.anl.gov. If you've already told us you didn't want to use your MCS username and you're getting this message, we somehow missed that notice and need to be told again. If you're getting this note, you're on the list to be changed. Your current MCS username is: core-sysadmins Your current Argonne username is: core-sysadmins-anl After July 22, you will use the username core-sysadmins for all logins. And, again, you should reset both passwords to something new, and make them both the same to allow for a seamless transition later in the year when we make the final switch. -- Craig

Scotty hasn't backed up since 3/28/2012 and I can't seem to make it. While trying to debug that I see that it's been up 618 days which led me to ask, what do we need to do to decommission scotty? Is the IHW migration the last major piece?
