We expect them to provide much more detail and fidelity, with a much better understanding of their uncertainties, while still executing robustly and efficiently on ever larger and more complex computing systems. With this in mind, a workshop to discuss bold, new computational ideas to address longer-term science needs for climate modeling is being convened. The DOE Office of Science BER and ASCR programs are sponsoring the event, titled ï¿½Advancing Cross-cutting Ideas for Computational Climate Scienceï¿½, or AXICCS 2016. It is a grassroots effort to generate fresh thinking that will mold the optimal science directions and motivate the latest and as yet to be uncovered ASCR developments that will be required to handle new requirements. A report outlining the challenges, strategies to address them, and possible avenues for execution will be one of the outcomes of the event. A website with details and logistics will be provided shortly. A key aspect to achieve the workshop goals is to brainstorm before the event, and to accomplish this we are soliciting community input in the form of ï¿½ideasï¿½ papers. Overall space at the event is limited, but we plan to accommodate the lead authors of these ideas papers via a presentation (oral or poster) and acknowledgement in the workshop report. Some of those selected will be included in the workshop write- up. Details about the format for the ideas papers and templates to download are provided at http://www.csm.ornl.gov/workshops/AXICCS/paper.html. Ideas papers must be submitted through a link to EasyChair no later than 5:00pm Eastern Time on Nov 24, 2015, and official invitations to present will be sent to selected lead authors by Dec 9, 2015. Attendees will need to cover their own travel expenses. ACME Exascale Roadmap summit on Jan 23

Hello everyone, FYI: The day after the 6-month review, a small summit is being held to: "Hold an initial discussion on climate-computing issues. Plan a larger workshop on strategies to maximize ACME performance and portability on current and future DOE LCFs." Paul Messina, will you be going? Agenda is attached. The white paper mentioned is just going to be a summary of past material on this issue and Mark Taylor will actually be writing it. Rob

ACME Fall meeting news

ACME is having a "most hands" meeting this week in Albuquerque. ACME management updates: PNNL's Ruby Leung will take over from Bill Collins as the ACME Chief Scientist and joins the ACME Executive Committee and Council. Bill Riley will replace Bill Collins as the LBNL rep on the ACME Council. Updates from Dorothy: ACME is becoming more of a division-wide program for CESD/BER. ARM,ASR, ACME had a workshop (invite only) on Oct 21-22 to talk about how ARM, ASR research can be taken up more quickly by ACME and what big problems they could work on together. TES will have a similar meeting Nov 19. "Make sure NGEE's impact ACME" ACME now has a small component in “Energy/Human”. led by Kate Calvin, Andrew Jones. Exercising existing GCAM-CESM carbon cycle coupling in iESM. Test importance of water management on water cycle in ACME. ACME project review will be in Spring. Will be forming an ACME Laboratory Management Board. NESAP and CAAR postdoctoral positions with ACME are still open. Dorothy's program will soon issue a FOA to universities to help with ACME. ACME may participate in next CLIVAR climate process team effort. USGCRP Climate Modeling Summit now an annual meeting for program managers of all weather/climate model development groups in U.S.. Next meeting is in March.
