The Executive Committee read the applications and selected an initial set of Dedicated Staff members. From that list, we identified Group Leaders for the 5 groups. We then asked each of the Group Leaders to suggest additional Dedicated and Regular /Core Activities-only staff members. Finally, the Executive Committee and the 5 Group Leaders discussed the entire list, and made a very few final additions to complete the team. Everyone who applied should have received personal notification via email a few weeks ago, except LANL scientists, who should have been notified via their management. If you applied and did not receive a response, or if the information below is different from that which you received, please contact me immediately. I hope everyone has a safe and happy holiday. There is an all-hands virtual meeting this Thursday at 8 am PT; 11 am ET. Information can be found on the Confluence page link below. Selection of Dedicated Staff and Regular Staff working only on Core Activities. The selection of staff in these categories is complete and will be announced as soon as we confirm notification with all of the E3SM Laboratory Management Points-of-Contact. We received far more applications than we anticipated. We thought it would be a challenge to get a sufficient number of staff members to completely fill the Core Activities. Instead, we received more applications than there is effort allocated in the preliminary Core Activity staff budget. Many people have asked how the selections were made. I will attempt to provide a summary below The Executive Committee read the applications and selected an initial set of Dedicated Staff members. From that list, we identified the 5 Group Leaders and deputies for 3 of the 5 groups. We may or may or appoint deputies for the remaining two groups in the future. We then asked each of the 5 Group Leaders to suggest additional Dedicated Staff and Regular Staff/Core Activities only. Finally, the Executive Committee and the 5 Group Leaders discussed the entire list, and made a few adjustments to select the final team. 3. Next Generation Development (NGD) sub-projects and selection of white papers for the sub-projects The Executive Committee looked at all of the NGD white papers last week, which resulted in an initial priority list of research activities for Phase 2. We grouped these priority activities into 5 areas (possibly six) and selected sub-project leaders for three of the areas. Once we have all of the sub-project leaders identified, we will form small committees for each area comprised of Exec Team members, possibly one or more Group Leaders and the sub-project leader of each area and go through all of the white papers relevant to that area for the final selection.
