Here is the call for E3SM Next-Generation Development white papers. People not currently on E3SM are welcome to submit. The want an estimate of the *total* FTE required per NGD, not per-person. There is no stated per-person minimum FTE and discussions today indicated they may allow under-50% for key people on an NGD. Please forward to others at Argonne who might be interested. The Phase2 core-team leads and "deputies" for the core activities have been announced. Todd Ringler (LANL) Cryosphere experiment Chris Golaz (LLNL) Water Cycle experiment deputy: Luke Van Roekel (LANL) Kate Calvin (PNNL) BGC experiment deputy: Susannah Burrows (PNNL) Phil Jones (LANL) Performance Rob Jacob (ANL) Infrastructure deputy: Chengzhu Zhang (LLNL) The above plus the exec comm will now start looking at dedicated staff applications. The current schedule: Nov 14: Core-Team leadership established – two extended call with Leaders to pick teams (those calls are tomorrow and Friday). We were unsure that we would receive sufficient interest to fully staff the Core Activities, but the opposite is the case. We received far more letters of interest from qualified people than there is work for them to do under Core Activities. As a result, we will take a little longer to reply than we had first planned. It is our goal to put a solid team together with complementary strengths and skills. We want to be fair and fully consider each application. Can postdocs respond to the two invitations? This is particularly relevant for postdocs who have already been working on E3SM for a year or more and their lab management may be ready to open a staff position for them.* A. Yes. If the post-doc is a good fit for an E3SM position, the leadership will work with the individual's lab management to define their role and longer term funding, as every laboratory's post-doc to staff conversion policies differ. ** *Q. Are there restrictions on who can lead NGD projects in terms of time commitments to other projects? For example, to be "Dedicated Staff," one is not supposed to be leading an “ecosystem” project (e.g. SciDAC, NGD). Are there any similar restrictions on who can lead an NGD project?* A. There are no restrictions on who may lead a NGD project, other than the requirement that one cannot be led by Dedicated Staff member. This does not remove the 50% E3SM requirement, however. ** *Q. I want to apply to be a Dedicated Staff member, but also want to submit a whitepaper for an NGD project. Are these options mutually exclusive because NGD subproject leaders cannot be Dedicated Staff?* A. We are not planning to have a large number of NGD projects. Consequently, it is possible to add ideas and concepts from several related white papers and merge them to a bigger NGD sub-project. You can still work on your idea as a Dedicated Staff NGD Epic leader. The aggregated sub-project may be led by someone else. ** *Q. I plan to apply for a Dedicated Staff position. In case I am not selected, I want to be considered for Regular staff working on Core activities at 50%. Should I send in 2 applications by the Nov 3 deadline.* A. No. The application for Dedicated Staff will cover both categories. ** *Q. Why are you asking for the staff applications in two stages?* A. This is a new organizational structure, which relies heavily on a critical level of Core activities for the next three years. Before we proceed much further, the Executive Committee must ascertain whether staffing the Core Activities is feasible.
