New ACME software modernization effort - not ECP

Hello Argonne ACME folks, ACME program manager Dorothy Koch has secured some funding to do work on general software modernization for ACME. This is NOT the Exascale Project funding which will be the subject of a different email. Sandia's Andy Salinger has been tapped to lead the only proposal. He gave me the details in a phone call last week. He, Mark Taylor and Bill Spotz wrote a requested white paper (attached). (Note: the paper mentions CMDV because the new funds came at the same time but this is a separate project.) The tentative total budget is $4.75M/year for at most 3 years. This is a one time piece of funding to get stuff done. It may be cancelled after 1 year. I see this as a chance to do some of the things we proposed in ACME but were not funded. Sandia's white paper outlines a bunch of topics. Andy asked me to scope out the requirements for an at-scale coupler (including budget and staff) and to float ideas for other parts. I've reached out to a few people on this list (Anshu, Jed, Franck, Vijay, Jason, Andreas) to help with this proposal and will keep everyone updated. Rob

ACME and Exascale

Hi everyone, Some background: the new Exascale Computing Project includes some funding for Office of Science applications to get them ready for the next generation of machines. There won't be an open call. Instead, projects will be selected based on whitepapers, rankings by labs and backing by program offices. ACME has the enthusiastic backing of BER. In many ways, ACME IS the BER exascale program. ACME is also already projectized and involves multiple labs. All of this helps ACME has submitted one whitepaper to represent all the lab's and the current version is attached. Sandia is handling the submission. The ACME executive committee decided the authorship would be the Exec Comm and the Performance Group leads. A final version of this paper is due next Friday. There will then be a cut-down from 57 possible projects to half that number. We'll be notified by March 11th if we made that cut. We then get to write a longer proposal due a month later. Funding projections are $2.5-$5M/yr for 5 years per project with an option to renew for another 5. Let me know if you have any suggestions for the current white paper. Rob

BER-Exascale Requirements Workshop late March

FYI about this workshop. From the original invite: "ASCR and BER are planning a BER-Exascale Requirements Workshop, to be held March 29-31 in the DC area. The meeting will start in the morning on March 29 and end no later than 12 noon on March 31. This workshop is one in a series that the ASCR Leadership Facilities are conducting with each Program Office in the DOE Office of Science, in order to inform their planning for exascale-era-facilities acquisitions. These workshops will be identifying the science goals, and the computing resources needed to achieve those goals, by BER in the 2020-2025 timeframe. Dave Bader (for CESD) and Adam Arkin (for BSSD) are co-leads for the workshop. We have assembled a CESD-program committee that consists of Dave, Dorothy Koch from DOE, Ruby Leung from PNNL, Bill Collins from LBNL and Mark Taylor from Sandia." 2 new ACME staff

Hello Argonne ACME folks, This is overdue but I wanted to let everyone know that Jason Sarich and Andreas Wilke have joined the ACME project at half-time each. Dorothy gave us a little extra this FY for this needed effort. Welcome Jason and Andreas! Background: back in October, ACME lost one of its few SE's and Sandia was having no luck making a hire. I asked around internally and Jason and Andreas were both interested and ACME management liked their CVs. After much delay, they officially started Jan 18th. Rob
