The mission of NE-AMS (the Office of Advanced Modeling and Simulation) is the creation of predictive (also flexible and upgradeable) code capabilities of interest to its sponsoring DOE-NE programs using modern computational tools and methods. NEAMS is interested in coordinating the NEAMS reactor, fuel, and fuel cycle code efforts, including the high-fidelity, predictive modeling of reactor fuels, neutronics and thermofluid dynamics, etc., with activities conducted under other NE programs. To raise awareness of work conducted by others, we believe it useful to share monthly reports across the spectrum of researchers and program leads/managers involved in such work. We are convinced that this will lead to new connections and the leverage of results obtained by one party to the advantage of other parties. If any recipients have a monthly report to share that is not included here, feel free to send it to me for further distribution or use this distribution list yourself. NEAMS on NPR

Everyone, I was very surprised and pleased last week when I climbed into my Hertz rental car last Monday and started flipping around the radio dial. It lasted on NPR's All Things Considered and I heard the attached radio story. It was about the work with is being done by Kelly Michel and crew at LANL on the use of virtual reality to assist in training non-proliferation inspectors. I am happy to report that Pratap Sadasivan and NEAMS have had a hand in funding that work. I am not sure what the audience is for NPR, but I am pretty sure that this is the widest audience that has heard about something related to NEAMS. Congratulations to Kelly and her team! I am very, very happy to report that last Tuesday the NEAMS presentations at the FCRD review were outstanding and very well received. My compliments to Hussein, Keith, Randy, Pratap, and Kevin for making a great set of presentations. I think everyone did an excellent job explaining the overall program and then getting into some specific details about the work that has been done and the connections it has with the other parts of FCRD. In particular, I want to thank everyone for the work you have all done to connect NEAMS with the other FCRD campaigns. It was very clear from the other campaigns that they are not relying on NEAMS to produce the capabilities they need to conduct their R&D. We have clearly come a long way over the last couple of years. For those of you who were involved at the time, in the early days we were either politely ignored or outright scorned. Milestones

Team, A quick thanks en route to the airport for (a) providing me with the input I needed for tomorrow's FCRD Semi Annual Review and (b) the milestones we requested. The HQ staff spent most of the weekend, plus 12 hour days last week, preparing a strong case for funding increases in the coming years. Your milestones are the mist compelling evidence we can offer. To that end (and others) we will continue to work with each of you to further refine those milestones. They are truly the metrics of our success and the same by which we will be judge. NEAMS: FY2010 funds

Fellow PMT'ers, I know you're all feeling spammed by me lately. Apologies. Appears to be the nature of the season. I'm preparing my monthly performance review for FCRD, which I normally defend by teleconference, but this month I must defend in person at the semi-annual meeting next week. I've brought this up before, but never so explicitly. NEAMS is, on average, substantially under-running (some elements by nearly 40%!!!!) and I have been getting questions from HQ staff about it. Keep in mind that if this continues, it dramatically deflates our argument that we are grossly under-funded. To be certain, I am not arguing to spend frivolously. But, we must show steady progress if we hope to grow. I will be grilled about this next week in Knoxville. I ask two things from you: Please touch bases with your WPM's and admonish them about delivering on time and spending according to plan. Please make sure there are compelling statements in FCPICS defending our under-running. I'm the dude on the hook to explain these.
