Team, As we approach our April meetings in Chattanooga, I'd like to do a little homework to render the ancillary meeting with industry (CT Roadmapping meeting hosted by David Bernholdt) as useful as possible. David, Jim and I have spoken and we've concluded that the best way to get the dialog rolling with industry is to identify a single "blue sky" experiment that would be valuable to you in developing and/or validating your code or model. That is, if you could devise a measurement, where there were no limits on the variables that could be observed, what experiment would you design or request from an experimental team? As an example, if I were the fuels IPSC leader, perhaps I would say "I would like a full 3D characterization of a pin irradiated in a reactor or other radiation inducing device, taking care to accurately measure not only pin dimensions, but also temperature, neutron flux, isotope depletion and accretion, gap thickness, etc. etc. etc. at X positions on the pin as a function of time." This exercise will, by design, produce specificity that is certainly unobtainable. But it will draw out the experimentalists to tell us what they can do. (We've struggled with that goal thus far.) And it may spawn some creative ideas about how they might obtain information they have never considered before. I note that in the case of the fuels IPSC, this information may already exist from the separate effects experiments meeting Cetin hosted about a year ago. As far as I am aware, no similar forum has been hosted for the other IPSCs. As always, I remain hypersensitive to the risk of misusing your time. For that reason, I suggest that I have a phone conversation with each germane member of the PMT to solicit this information. If you agree, I will "interview" each of you separately and capture your thoughts in a single page (or maybe even a paragraph) and send back to you for review. In this way, I am hoping this will require less than 30 minutes of your time. I would like to have these phone conversations next week if possible. CT Roadmapping Workshop (Action Required)

Dear IPSC and FMM leads, and all, I've mentioned our plan to hold the CT Roadmapping Workshop in Chattanooge just before the Spring PI meeting. Please see below for a description of the workshop. I need your help in order to line up all of the participants, so please see the two action items below for IPSC leads (one for FMM). I would like to have 1-2 representatives per IPSC, and also FMM attend to present some background material on their program element and participate in the breakouts to help us understand the program's CT needs in more detail, and how they might be implemented most effectively. Representatives of the other program elements are welcome to attend if they want, but I expect the impacts of the workshop on your work will be at most second order, through the IPSCs and FMM. ACTION ITEM: would the IPSC and FMM leads please send me names and emails of 1-2 representatives of your team who are able to attend the meeting on the chosen dates. DEADLINE: COB Friday 4 March. We have a handle on a group of industry representatives, which we're lining up via the ID/IQ contract. I also need your help in identifying 1-2 representatives from your more immediate customer base, within the DOE complex. Please note that to be most effective, we're looking for people who appreciate what NEAMS is bringing to the table, but are also close enough to the M&S needs in their area that they can provide concrete input on how to most effectively transfer the tools and technology we're developing. The purpose of this workshop is to bring together representatives from the IPSC and FMM teams and representatives of the user community to discuss the capabilities that NEAMS is developing and what mechanisms and forms of outreach would be most useful and effective in making these capabilities accessible and useful to the user community. We expect the discussions to range from capabilities of interest, timelines, and how to most effectively make NEAMS tools part of user's work flows; to mechanisms for interactions and feedback from users; to possible needs for training or more individualized support of users. The current plan for the workshop is to begin with short introductions to NEAMS and different elements of the program, as well as some background presentations on how other DOE programs and projects of similar scope and size have approached their capability transfer needs. We then plan a set of breakout sessions, by IPSC area, to allow the discussions to be focused on the specific needs of each area. Following the breakout sessions, we will reconvene the whole, hear reports from the breakout groups and discuss the common and distinctive needs and ideas that have emerged. Finally, we will make an initial sketch of a roadmap to respond to the goals and needs expressed by the user community. Following the workshop, the CT lead, in consultation with the IPSC and FMM teams, will flesh out the sketch into a full roadmap report recommending an appropriately staged plan to implement a Capability Transfer program for the NEAMS program. This report is to be delivered to NEAMS management by 30 June 2011, and a draft will be circulated to workshop participants before then for comment. Expectations for User Community Representatives While highly valuing your input, we also wish to minimize our demands on your valuable time. Our intent is to focus your involvement on the two-day face-to-face workshop. To prepare for the meeting, we anticipate holding a teleconference of at most 1.5 hours and provide some advance reading material taking at most 1-2 hours. As followup, we will invite you to comment on the draft roadmap report once it is ready, again at most 1-2 hours. We certainly hope that you will find the meeting useful and may want to pursue other followup discussions, perhaps with the IPSC and FMM teams, but that will be beyond the scope of this workshop. At present, we ask that you try to reserve two full days for the workshop, though if the details of the agenda permit, we will attempt to reduce it to 1.5 days. One purpose of advance teleconference will be to discuss the workshop agenda in more detail and determine the extent to which proprietary concerns might stifle open discussion. While we believe that the overall goals of this workshop will be best served by open discussion between the NEAMS developers and the user community, we can adapt the agenda to provide for more private discussions if that will maximize the information exchange. Alex and all, I was hoping to find some of the presentations you guys have given recently about NEAMS on the SharePoint site, but really didn't find much. I was thinking particularly about the Summit that occurred a week or two ago, but I'm sure there are others. If I missed it, I apologize and please point me to the right place. If not, I think they would be useful both as fodder when we need to talk to people about NEAMS more broadly than just our work. Today's SharePoint Post - The End of the Beginning

Regards, Alex --------------------------------------------- Alexandria, VA: Whether you realize it or not, all DOE programs have a natural lifecycle. Just like a good story there is a beginning, middle, and end. The period of time spent in each phase varies from program to program. There lots and lots of examples in DOE of programs not every getting past the beginning phase (e.g. GNEP, Superconducting Supercollider, Clinch River Breeder Reactor). There are also lots of examples of programs that have very extended beginnings or middles (e.g. NIF, NGNP, ASCI, SciDAC). The important point is that good program leaders understand the phase in which their program is in. They also understand what needs to be done in each phase. I will contend that up until recently NEAMS has been in the "beginning" phase. Over the last three years, we have been working hard to create the vision, plans, and team needed for success. I also think we have done an outstanding job of delivering some early successes. I think we have done everything possible expose the opportunities that advanced modeling and simulation has to offer to the DOE's Nuclear Energy program. The only question now is -- under these very difficult financial conditions -- where will NE chose to puts its limited financial resources? Early indications are not good. We have lots a few battles lately (FY12 budget, FY13 IPL), but I am not prepared to say that the war is lost. Bottom line -- I believe that NEAMS is entering a critical phase of transitioning from its "beginning" to its "middle." I believe that there are lots of examples of programs that were lost by not making this transition gracefully (see the examples above). I also believe that making the transition from "beginning to middle" require as much consideration and planning as the "beginning of the beginning." So -- I believe we should declare success for a good beginning to NEAMS! Next I plan to catch my breath with a cruise vacation with my wife, and come back recharged and ready to tackle the transition of NEAMS from its beginning to its middle.
