I hope all of you are having a restful holiday. Please accept my apologies for interrupting those of you who are on vacation. I empathize. The recent addition of Initiative Leaders to the PMT mailing list has caused some confusion, so far regarding the upcoming January meeting. So let me attempt to clarify. January 24 and 25 is our usual Winter PMT meeting. Attendees will be the 8 PMT members, their alternates, and the LC. On the third day, January 26, the meeting will be open to the four Initiative Leaders and the agenda will focus on those items exclusively. More to come. Discussion Topics for NEAMS January PMT Meeting

Everyone, I do not know where we stand on the agenda for the January meeting, but the following are a few thoughts that I have on discussion topics. I encourage everyone to provide their own input. Then, with any luck, we will be able to beat these into an agenda for the meeting. Here are some of my ideas: * Strategic plans for FY-13 objectives * Review of Q1 progress tracking report and improvements needed for Q2 * Response to initial NEAC review of NEAMS comments * Plans to complete the NEAC review * Plans/actions to implement the competitive selection process for FY13 NEAMS projects * NEAMS requirement gathering/system engineering * Creation of NEAMS resource loaded network and long term schedule * Discuss plans for NEAMS one year initiatives o Seismic o UFD simulation functions and requirements o Experiments to ModSim Pathways o Severe Accident Code Study * 2012 plans for technical exchanges between NEAMS and o CASL o CESAR o Other DOE ModSim activities I know many of you are on vacation (and I hope it is a good one) - but look at this once you return. Folks, I'm getting feedback from several of you that you're having trouble generating input for the quarterly report, primarily because of PICSNE delays. We may have to produce this first report without exercising the "PICSNE mining" strategy. Please just work with your WPM's to compile their input even if it won't be going into PICSNE right away. Nothing too detailed required for this first attempt. While we don't want to generate anything unflattering of NEAMS, I view this first attempt as a learning experience. NEAC Review of NEAMS Kick-off Summary

Everyone, Sorry for the delay in getting this. The following are my impressions of the kickoff meeting of the NEAC Review of NEAMS that occurred last Wednesday (12/14). For those who attended, please look over these summary comments and let me know if you have any corrections or additions. For those who did not, please let me know if you have any questions or need any clarifications. * The review meeting stared on time and all the reviewers were in attendance. This was o Ray Juzaitis, Texas A&M University (Chair) o John Ahearne, NEAC o Dana Christensen, NREL/NEAC o Dmitri Kusnezov, NNSA o Robert Little, LANL o Regis Matzie, Westinghouse (ret)/NEAC o James Peery, SNL o Robert Rosner, ANL/University of Chicago o Al Sattelberger, ANL/NEAC o Brian Wirth, University of Tennessee o Sumit Ray, Westinghouse * Overall the presentations went very well and we were able stick to that agenda (attached). There were lots of questions and it was a very good thing that we scheduled specific times for discussions. As it was, the day was very full and everyone was exhausted at the end (at least I was). * The following are the summary remarks that made by Ray J. at the end of the day. These remarks came from the review team's final caucus. o The overall vision and execution of the NEAMS program is good and the review team appreciated the presentation made that day. The presentations were considered to be just about at right level of detail. o The major comment of the review team was that it is not clear that the vision of NEAMS aligns well with the resources that have been allocated to it. The committee feels they are too low to achieve the vision and that there is a need to focus and prioritize the activities. o The review team would like to understand what other modeling and simulation activities are being funded in the other parts of NE, with the hope that these might provide additional resources. o The committee thinks that NEAMS needs to do a better job of embracing CASL. The committee understand the need to maintain an "air gap" between the programs, but hopes that there is a way to do a better job coordinating activities. Given the limited resources, CASL provides an opportunity for leverage. o The committee encourages the idea of presenting modeling and simulation for NE as a coherent effort that is being led by a single office (the Advanced Modeling and Simulation Office (AMSO)) rather than two distinct programs (NEAMS and CASL). The committee feels that will present a better picture of what is really going on within NE. Along those line, the committee recommends that AMSO change some of its diagrams to show a closer connection between NEAMS and CASL. o The committee recommends that NEAMS identify some "time urgent" issues that need to be addressed (using modeling and simulation to develop accident tolerant fuels was one suggestions). The committee suggestions that by embracing a time urgent issue, that NEAMS will likely get better support for resources. o The review team also suggests that NEAMS develop a "value proposition" for the program. Working on Used Fuel Disposition could be one of these where the cost of experiments could be compared to the reduced number when the experiments are supplemented by modeling and simulation. * Finally, for the next meeting, the review committee would like to meet with NEAMS major stake holders. This could include: o NE R&D Program Managers (NE-5, 6, & 7 DASs) o Laboratory Campaign Directors o NRC o Industry The review committee would like to hold this meeting sometime in late January or early February. Just to let everyone know, Jim Peltz is working to coordinate calendars for the last item and we expect that the meeting is going to slip into early February. Also, at this meeting, we would like to make sure the PMT leads (or alternates) are in attendance. So - for those who attended, please let me know if I got anything wrong or missed any comments. The Fat Lady

Everyone, It seems she a'singing. It looks like everything is lined up for the House and Senate to pass the FY-12 Maxibus that will fund most of the government including the Department of Energy. So - what does it mean for NE? We are still figuring out the details, but attached is a spreadsheet you might find useful. It captures the President's Request, House and Senate Marks, and the final Omnibus numbers. NE will be working out the exact numbers in the next few days - but now it is a matter of accounting for taxes and other things. We have our top line numbers. Hi All, Can anyone point me in the right direction. I would like to distribute some documentation on NEAMS challenge problems to some folks helping with development of the NEAMS web site. I have never used the sharepoint site but am trying to get my account activated there. Can someone maybe tell me where I can find documentation on NEAMS challenge problems on sharepoint and/or maybe send me some PDFs?
