NEAMS Capability Demo Problems

PMTer's, You know - the more I have thought about this, the more I have realized the problems with the term "Challenge Problems." I am sorry to be so late to the party. As I thought about on the long flight home and over the weekend, I started to think about how the term "Demo" problem was more descriptive because that is what we are really trying to achieve - a demonstration of the new NEAMS capabilities. So - unless there are any violent objections, or really good ideas out there, I suggest we adopt the term "NEAMS Capability Demo Problems" (or Demo Problems for short). Finally, I really need to get the slides that you presented at the PMT meeting last week. I know we have a lot more details to develop for the Demo problems, but I have already been talking your work up here in the NE Front Office and people are very interesting in seeing how NEAMS can use these to explain what it will be producing in the future. What MIGHT Capability Transfer Be?

To follow up on some of the discussions at the meeting today, here's the short list of things I've presented before that we could consider as possible roles for Capability Transfer. I'm sure there are others we might also think about -- send me an email with your ideas. * Draw on experience of programs like ASCI - Give users reasons to use new tools (capability, funding, support) - Deliver early and often * Draw on plans of (& collaborate with) CASL - Major investment in .Advanced Modeling Applications. - Users (technology designers, operators) built into project * User outreach - Supporting Technical Director for NEAMS Integration - Act as a focal point for collecting and tracking external requirements * Evaluation of challenge problems and software * Basic software support for users, computer centers * Training on NEAMS products * ... I'm planning to convene a CT Roadmapping workshop in the next few months (I'm still working through the question of how/whether/when we should begin interacting with industry, and particularly whether they should be at this workshop too). Everyone, This proposal from the Russians is now a week old -- I would like to spend some time this week at the PMT (perhaps a side session) reviewing this and preparing a response. The question is, do we want to accept the proposal "as is" or make a counter? The clock is ticking towards April and I do not want to become an excuse for the April meeting to be a "bust." NEAMS - The User Manual

Everyone, Just to give everyone a bit of time to look at this before our PMT meeting on the 26th and 27th - attached is a draft of the NEAMS User Manual. The idea behind this Manual is to document the way things work in NEAMS. This includes interesting things like: * Relationships to the Hub and other NE modeling and simulation programs * NEAMS Products and Development Processes * Organization * Roles and Responsibilities * QA * Deployment Plans * And a few other things. My hope is that we can spend a few minutes at the PMT meeting talking about the contents of this Manual. The thing I would like to achieve at the meeting is coming to a common understanding of how NEAMS does business. I suspect the acid test will be when we get some new members of NEAMS and the PMT, give them this document and them coming away with a pretty good idea of how this crazy thing is supposed to work. Please start looking it over and prepare your comments. In my mind, this is just a starting point and we have lots of room to discuss the way you think things should really work.
