Attached is an extract of the Q1 finance and performance report presented to NE senior management. The slides show the FY12 priorities of the various programs with which we interact (I have left out other programs) as well as the projected spend curves. All programs are dead on spending to date (end of Jan) because the baseline that was put in place in Feb used actuals for the pre-Feb spend plan. Hi All, Just looking at travel to DC for the meeting in April. Looks like Gaithersburg is ~1 hour drive from Dulles and Ronald Reagan maybe more with bad traffic. Do we know when we expect to adjourn on 25th? Last flight I can get back to Sacramento is 5:25. Maybe thats too hopeful? Mark -- Mark C. Comments on web site

The domain name for our site both is and isn't important. The important things are can be it found, and can it be remembered. Being indexed by Google tends to solve the first these days. And there are many possible domain names that would be sufficiently obvious and memorable. So in this sense, you can argue that we should not be too attached to any single name. What is important about the domain name is whether it comes with limitations or costs that we don't like. I believe the initial survey of hosting possibilities Laura Schulz conducted revealed a few such cases -- costs of thousands per month, or review & release requirements for every change to the web site, etc. With these points in mind, a few thoughts on our strategy for dealing with this... * I'm not surprised that there is resistance to neams.gov (if I understand the situation correctly). I had heard in years past about raising the threshold for getting a top-level *.gov domain in order to reduce the pollution of the name space. I'm frankly surprised that CASL was able to get theirs. * Is something like neams.energy.gov a reasonable solution? By this, I mean retaining DOE branding (part of the family), but a degree of autonomy from the main corporate DOE web site. Perhaps even sufficient autonomy that neams.energy.gov could be hosted by a lab instead of HQ? (That might be stretching it, I realize.) * I don't particularly like the neams.<lab>.gov solution for a number of reasons. It makes things look parochial, even if they aren't. And it might be harder to implement than you think (I haven't checked recently, but in the past, ORNL would not point one of our subdomains to an outside location). * Look instead for something like neams.info, neams.us (which Tom already owns and might be willing to sell at the right price :-) or some other top-level domain (.org is taken). At ORNL, at least, it is easy to buy a domain name and serve it with an ORNL system. I've got a number of such domains for other projects. -- David E. Updated Royal Society Talk

Big Animals Pictures

Everyone, As you all probably know - on March 20th and 21st NE-7 are going to hold its annual technology summit. At that meeting, I am going to have 15 minutes to introduce AMSO (NEAMS and the CASL). In my short presentation I would like to make a statement about the AMSO product lines and the codes we are building to support those. Attached is a slide that I believe does a pretty good job presenting that very high level view. I have a very good friend who is a lawyer (yes it is indeed possible to have a lawyer friend) and quite the Washington insider. He is always berating me to be able to tell my modeling and simulation story using "big animal pictures" (C = Cat, D = Dog). His point is that most people do not want or need to know all the nitty gritty details of the inner working of the program. I suspect this also applied to most of the people who will be attending the summit when it comes to modeling and simulation. So, please look at the attached slide and let me know what you think. We can argue about the names in the boxes, their position, which touches which, or the shading (I could not get PowerPoint to shade things darker in the middle and lighter on the edges), but in the end I do not think that is the most important thing. I believe we need to be able to tell the NEAMS and CASL story in nice simple terms that use those "big animal pictures." Let me know what you think and we can talk more about it on today's PMT call. Larzelere's Royal Society Meeting Presentation

Everyone, As you may have heard, I will be making a presentation at an upcoming British Royal Society meeting entitled Nuclear Energy in the 21st Century. The meeting is being organized by Robin Grimes of Imperial College and he kindly put me on the agenda to talk about the role of modeling and simulation. You can get more information about the meeting at: http://royalsociety.org/events/2012/nuclear-energy/ I have been given a 30 minute slot and I have been working on my presentation (attached). One of the challenges for the presentation is to a) make it technically "meaty" enough, but recognizing that it is a pretty diverse set of topics, so b) keeping it at a high enough so as not to lose too many people in the audience. Just so you know, I anticipate spending most of my talk on the two modeling and simulation examples (slides 5 and 6). Also, if you want to see the animations, make sure to use the slide show mode. Attached is my presentation and I have two requests: * Please look it over to make sure I am not saying anything that is technically incorrect. * Also, look to see if I have any terminology wrong, and in particular any acronyms incorrect Thanks for your help.
