Heterogeneity springs from the richness of environments where diversity and resource abundance prevail. Recognizing, capturing, and efficiently exploiting this diversity in an integrated and coherent manner are key goals of heterogeneous computing. Heterogeneous computing systems are those with a range of diverse computing resources that can be on a chip, within a computer, or on a local or geographically distributed network. The development of heterogeneous multi-core chips and the pervasive use of networks by all segments of society mean that the number and types of heterogeneous computing resources are growing rapidly. This growth creates the need and opportunity for new research to effectively utilize these resources in innovative and novel ways. For example, cluster computing, grid computing, peer-to-peer computing, and cloud computing all involve elements of heterogeneity. The effective implementation of efficient applications in these environments, however, requires that a host of issues be addressed that simply do not occur in homogeneous systems. Whereas many researchers and practitioners that use computers have a peripheral awareness of heterogeneity in their respective fields, few critically approach their fields from the heterogeneous perspective. This is not particularly surprising, because each field has its own unique challenges and imperatives that propel investigations in search of solutions to pressing problems. Addressing computing problems from the heterogeneous perspective offers at least three advantages: (i) the design and development of more advanced high-performance computing platforms, (ii) insight into new solution approaches, and (iii) exposure to new research opportunities and relationships among distinct research areas. HCW encourages the examination of both hardware and software systems from the perspective of heterogeneity. With the increasing number of components in heterogeneous parallel and distributed systems, failure is becoming a critical factor that impacts application performance. High-performance computing systems, especially those heading towards exascale, are also becoming increasingly heterogeneous and hierarchical, expecting to routinely employ heterogeneous multicores, various accelerators (such as GPUs), deeper memory hierarchies, and heterogeneous and hierarchical communication networks. This year, HCW is specifically encouraging (but not limited to) submissions that explore paradigms, algorithms, and techniques for high performance heterogeneous computing. HIPEAC 2012 POSTER SESSION: call for participation

[Apologies if you receive multiple copies of this email] Dear Professors, Researchers, And Graduate Students, If your research area is in architectures or compilers for high performance or embedded computing, we hope you have heard about the exciting new conference model that we are implementing in HiPEAC 2012, to be held in Paris, France on Jan 23-25, 2012. For more information, please go to http://www.hipeac.net/conference First of all, we have completely outsourced the paper selection process for the main conference track to ACM TACO. This resulted in many more submitted papers and higher quality accepted papers than previous years. Most accepted papers went through two solid review rounds, and both the reviewers and authors agree that the quality of the final version of the papers is much higher compared to the quality of the original submissions. All accepted papers will be presented at the main conference track. The chairs of the conference are convinced that this model offers so many advantages that it is here to stay. Parallel with the main track of the conference, there will be over 20 workshops and tutorials. Attendees are free to attend any of them, actually composing their personalized conference program. By efficiently packing so many activities in three days, we want to make this conference into an efficient networking event. On top of all that, we added a completely new concept --- THE POSTER SESSIONS. All participants can present their work during a huge poster session on the first day (Monday, during the evening cocktail). If you are a professor or independent researcher, we strongly encourage you to participate in the conference poster sessions or send your students to present their work during this poster session (posters are neither reviewed, nor published, so even work in progress can be presented). Doing so has two benefits: (i) You can get useful feedback from the people stopping by your poster. It might even mark the beginning of a future collaboration. (ii) This poster session has been announced to many companies and projects as a recruitment event. Hence, if you are a last year PhD student or postdoc, expect them to come to you and to offer you a job. During the second day, companies will present their products and services, and during the third day, EU projects will present their results. These two poster sessions offer you additional opportunities to learn more about them. Many companies and projects are currently hiring. This is a unique opportunity to find a dream job in industry, or in academia. As you can see, we want this conference to be far more than just a place where you present your work, or where you learn more about other people’s research. We really want to make it into a networking event that can impact the careers of many students as well as independent researchers. The 2012 International Workshop on Programming Models and Applications for Multicores and Manycores will be co-located with the PPoPP 2012 conference in New Orleans, Louisiana at 25th-29th February, 2012. Rapid advancements in multicore and chip-level multi-threading technologies open new challenges and make multicore systems a part of the computing landscape. From high-end servers to mobile phones, multicores and manycores are steadily entering every single aspect of the information technology. However most programmers are trained in sequential programming, yet most existing parallel programming models are prone to errors such as data race and deadlock. Therefore to fully utilise multicore and manycore hardware, parallel programming models that allow easy transition of sequential programs to parallel programs with good performance and enable development of error-free codes are urgently needed. This workshop is dedicated primarily to gather researchers and practitioners addressing the main challenges and share experiences in the emerging multicore and manycore software engineering and distributed programming paradigm. This workshop aims to provide a discussion forum for people interested in programming environments, models, tools and applications specifically designed for parallel multicore and manycore hardware environments. Heterogeneity springs from the richness of environments where diversity and resource abundance prevail. Recognizing, capturing, and efficiently exploiting this diversity in an integrated and coherent manner are key goals of heterogeneous computing. Heterogeneous computing systems are those with a range of diverse computing resources that can be on a chip, within a computer, or on a local or geographically distributed network. The development of heterogeneous multi-core chips and the pervasive use of networks by all segments of society mean that the number and types of heterogeneous computing resources are growing rapidly. This growth creates the need and opportunity for new research to effectively utilize these resources in innovative and novel ways. For example, cluster computing, grid computing, peer-to-peer computing, and cloud computing all involve elements of heterogeneity. The effective implementation of efficient applications in these environments, however, requires that a host of issues be addressed that simply do not occur in homogeneous systems. Whereas many researchers and practitioners that use computers have a peripheral awareness of heterogeneity in their respective fields, few critically approach their fields from the heterogeneous perspective. This is not particularly surprising, because each field has its own unique challenges and imperatives that propel investigations in search of solutions to pressing problems. Addressing computing problems from the heterogeneous perspective offers at least three advantages: (i) the design and development of more advanced high-performance computing platforms, (ii) insight into new solution approaches, and (iii) exposure to new research opportunities and relationships among distinct research areas. HCW encourages the examination of both hardware and software systems from the perspective of heterogeneity. With the increasing number of components in heterogeneous parallel and distributed systems, failure is becoming a critical factor that impacts application performance. High-performance computing systems, especially those heading towards exascale, are also becoming increasingly heterogeneous and hierarchical, expecting to routinely employ heterogeneous multicores, various accelerators (such as GPUs), deeper memory hierarchies, and heterogeneous and hierarchical communication networks. This year, HCW is specifically encouraging (but not limited to) submissions that explore paradigms, algorithms, and techniques for high performance heterogeneous computing.
