While inherently parallel, they exhibit highly variable execution performance at a local level due to unpredictable memory access patterns and/or network transfers, divergent control structures, and data imbalances. Moreover, they often require fine-grain synchronization and communication on large-data structures such as graphs, trees, unstructured grids, tables, sparse matrices, deep nets, and their combinations (such as, for example, attributed graphs). They have a significant degree of latent parallelism, which however is difficult to exploit due to their complex behavior. Current high performance architectures rely on data locality and regular computation to reduce access latencies, and often do not cope well with the requirements of these applications. Furthermore, irregular applications are difficult to scale on current supercomputing machines, due to their limits in fine-grained synchronization and small data transfers. Irregular applications pertain both to well established and emerging fields, such as machine learning, social network analysis, bioinformatics, semantic graph databases, Computer Aided Design (CAD), and computer security. Many of these application areas also process massive sets of unstructured data, which keep growing exponentially. Addressing the issues of irregular applications on current and future architectures will become critical to solve the challenges in science and data analysis of the next few years. The focus of the 2017 conference will be on Heterogeneous Node Architectures with Deep Memory Systems. ARCS 2017 will be organized by the Complang Group at the Vienna University of Technology and the CAPP group at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT). The proceedings of ARCS 2017 will be published in the Springer Lecture Notes on Computer Science (LNCS) series. After the conference, it is planned that authors of selected papers will be invited to submit an extended version of their contribution for publication in a special issue of the Journal of Systems Architecture. Call for Papers The 2nd International SYCL Workshop (SYCL 2017) Held in conjunction with ACM PPoPP 2017, Austin, Texas - February 4-7, 2017 https://codeplaysoftware.github.io/sycl-ppopp2017 SYCL (sɪkəl - as in sickle) is a royalty-free, cross-platform Khronos specification facilitating a C++ abstraction layer that builds on the underlying concepts, portability and efficiency of OpenCL, while adding the ease-of-use and flexibility of C++. SYCL enables single source development where C++ template functions can contain both host and device code to construct complex algorithms that use OpenCL acceleration, and then re-use them throughout their source code on different types of data. The SYCL Workshop aims to gather together SYCL's users, researchers, educators and implementors to encourage and grow a community of users behind the SYCL standard, and related work in C++ for heterogeneous architectures. SYCL 2017 is a half-day workshop to be held in Austin, Texas, on the 4th or 5th of February 2017, in conjunction with ACM PPoPP 2017. Travel Awards Student authors who present papers in this workshop are eligible to apply for travel awards. Further details will be announced after notification of acceptance. Extracting valuable information from raw data is especially difficult considering the velocity of growing data from year to year and the fact that 80% of data is unstructured. In addition, data sources are heterogeneous (various sensors, users with different profiles, etc.) and are located in different situations or contexts. Cloud computing, which concerns large-scale interconnected systems with the main purpose of aggregation and efficient exploiting the power of widely distributed resources, represent one viable solution. Resource management and task scheduling play an essential role, in cases where one is concerned with optimized use of resources. Moreover, a recently emerging research trend focuses on the possible convergence of Big Data Analytics and High-Performance Computing. In this context, a huge research space is open for exploring resource management for Big Data processing that efficiently leverage HPC clouds or hybrid systems combining cloud platforms and HPC systems. The goal of this special issue is to explore new directions and approaches for reasoning about advanced resource management and task scheduling methods and algorithms for Big Data platforms, and to encourage the submission of ongoing work with already important theoretical and practical results, as well as position papers and case studies of existing verification projects to highlight the art in this domain. Rampton Salt Palace Convention Center <http://www.csm.ornl.gov/srt/conferences/Scala/2016> Novel scalable scientific algorithms are needed in order to enable key science applications to exploit the computational power of large-scale systems. This is especially true for the current tier of leading petascale machines and the road to exascale computing as HPC systems continue to scale up in compute node and processor core count. These extreme-scale systems require novel scientific algorithms to hide network and memory latency, have very high computation/communication overlap, have minimal communication, and have no synchronization points. Scientific algorithms for multi-petaflop and exa-flop systems also need to be fault tolerant and fault resilient, since the probability of faults increases with scale. Resilience at the system software and at the algorithmic level is needed as a crosscutting effort. Finally, with the advent of heterogeneous compute nodes that employ standard processors as well as GPGPUs, scientific algorithms need to match these architectures to extract the most performance. This includes different system-specific levels of parallelism as well as co-scheduling of computation. Key science applications require novel mathematical models and system software that address the scalability and resilience challenges of current- and future-generation extreme-scale HPC systems. Co-located with the IEEE/ACM International Symposium on Cluster, Cloud and Grid Computing (CCGrid) in Madrid, Spain on May 14th 2017, the first International Symposium on Fog and Edge Computing will be a forum gathering a large community around all the challenges related to this new generation of Utility Computing. On the one hand, the development of Fog and Edge clouds includes dedicated facilities, operating system, network and middleware techniques to build and operate a set of small and geographically distant data centers that host virtualized computing resources. On the other hand, the use of Fog and Edge clouds require to extend current programming models and to propose new abstractions that will allow developers to design new applications that take benefit from such massively distributed systems. Though containers provide a great amount of flexibility and portability from a developer's perspective, there are several important challenges that need to be addressed by the infrastructure provider, in order to run these virtualized applications in a cloud environment.
