This Marathon is a high-level competition whose goal is to promote new developments in Parallel and Distributed Programming. Each team consists of three (3) students and a coach. They have 5 hours to solve up to 9 problems. For the local contest, the teams can bring printed hard copy material (e.g. books, manuals, notes, papers). ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Please accept our apologies if you receive multiple copies of this CFP ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Fifth International Workshop on Serverless Computing (WoSC) 2019 December 9-13 at UC Davis, CA https://www.serverlesscomputing.org/wosc5/ Over the last four to five years, Serverless Computing (Serverless) has gained an enthusiastic following in industry as a compelling paradigm for the deployment of cloud applications, and is enabled by the recent shift of enterprise application architectures to containers and micro-services. Many of the major cloud vendors, have released serverless platforms, including Amazon Lambda, Google Cloud Functions, Microsoft Azure Functions, IBM Cloud Functions. This workshop brings together researchers and practitioners to discuss their experiences and thoughts on future directions of serverless research. Serverless architectures offer different tradeoffs in terms of control, cost, and flexibility compared to distributed applications built on an Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) substrate. For example, a serverless architecture requires developers to more carefully consider the resources used by their code (time to execute, memory used, etc.) when modularizing their applications. This is in contrast to concerns around latency, scalability, and elasticity, which is where significant development effort has traditionally been spent when building cloud services. In addition, tools and techniques to monitor and debug applications aren't applicable in serverless architectures, and new approaches are needed. As well, test and development pipelines may need to be adapted. Another decision that developers face are the appropriateness of the serverless ecosystem to their application requirements. A rich ecosystem of services built into the platform is typically easier to compose and would offer better performance. However, composing external services may be unavoidable, and in such cases, many of the benefits of serverless disappear, including performance and availability guarantees. This presents an important research challenge, and it is not clear how existing results and best practices, such as workflow composition research, can be applied to composition in a serverless environment. Authors are invited to submit research papers, experience papers, demonstrations, or position papers. As computing has grown into a powerful tool for scientific inquiry, computational reproducibility has been one of the core assumptions underlying scientific computing. With "traditional" single-core CPUs, documenting a numerical result was relatively straightforward. However, hardware developments over the past several decades have made it almost impossible to ensure computational reproducibility or to even fully document a computation without incurring a severe loss of performance. This loss of reproducibility started when systems combined parallelism (e.g., clusters) with non-determinism (e.g., single-core CPUs with out-of-order execution). It has accelerated with recent architectural trends towards platforms with increasingly large numbers of processing elements, namely multicore CPUs and compute accelerators (GPUs, Intel Xeon Phi, FPGAs). Programmers targeting these platforms rely on tools and libraries to produce codes or execute them efficiently. As a result, codes can run efficiently, but have execution details that can be impossible to predict and are often very difficult to understand after execution. Furthermore, parallel implementations often result in code with varying execution orders between runs, leading to non-reproducible computations. The underlying reasons are that (1) the hardware and system software allocate parallel work in ways that are not always specifiable at compile time and (2) the execution often proceeds in an opportunistic manner with the execution order changing between runs. As such, floating-point computations, which are not commutative and associative, can have different execution orders and execute on different processing elements between runs, leading to runs with varying results as a matter of fact. The predictability of systems is further complicated by two issues that are becoming more critical as systems grow in scale: (1) interconnect systems with latencies that are often outside the control of programmers and (2) reliability as the mean time between failure (MTBF) is now measured in hours on large systems. This situation seriously affects the ability to rely on scientific computations as a metrological substitute for experimentation! Previous Offerings ================== This workshop combines the Numerical Reproducibility at Exascale workshops (conducted in 2015 and 2016 at SC) and the panel on Reproducibility held at SC'16 (originally a BOF at SC'15) to address several different issues in reproducibility that arise when computing at Exascale. The first combined workshop, Computational Reproducibility at Exascale 2017 (CRE2017), took place at SC17 and was a success; its web page can be found http://www.cs.fsu.edu/ cre/cre2017here; the following edition, CRE2018, took place at SC18 and its web page can be found at http://www.cs.fsu.edu/ cre/cre2018here. Workshop Scope ============== The workshop is meant to address issues of numerical reproducibility as well as approaches and best practices to sharing and running code and the reproducible dissemination of computational results. The workshop is meant to address the scope of the problems of computational reproducibility in HPC in general, and those anticipated as we scale up to Exascale machines in the next decade. The participants of this workshop will include government, academic, and industry stakeholders; the goals of this workshop are to understand the current state of the problems that arise, what work is being done to deal with these issues, and what the community thinks the possible approaches to these problems are. The workshop is meant to address the scope of the problems of numerical reproducibility in HPC in general and those anticipated as we scale to Exascale machines in the next decade. We initially seek contributions of extended abstracts (two pages) in the areas of computational reproducibility in HPC from academic, government, and industry stakeholders. Each workshop has its own requirements and schedule for submissions. Workshop paper submission dates typically fall after the notification date for the main symposium papers. Proceedings of the workshops are distributed at the conference, and are submitted for inclusion in the IEEE Xplore Digital Library after the conference. In 2020, the papers published in the proceedings will be in three categories: regular papers, short papers, and extended abstracts. IPDPS 2020 CALL FOR NEW WORKSHOPS The proposal of new workshop should contain the following information: Description: Provide a brief description of the workshop, its scope and topics; the list of organizers with the confirmed chair(s); the program committee members (indicate whether the members have been confirmed); and the important dates. A URL to the tentative main page of the workshop must be included. A workshop proposal without website containing the main information will be rejected. Organizers: Provide a short vita of the organizers, listing the current affiliation, position, and previous experience in organizing similar events, for example workshops/conferences/panels at IPDPS or other venues. Provide contact information (name and email) of at most 3 person that IPDPS should use as points of contact. History: If re-running the workshop (e.g., earlier editions were held at a venue other than IPDPS), provide general information by listing the name of the workshop, the hosting conference, year, number of papers submitted, number of papers accepted, number of attendees; if there were posters/panels, their numbers and topics (for panels), and URL’s of the existing web pages. Targeted papers and audience: Provide information on targeted papers and audience: (i) Where are the submissions from (government labs, universities, industry); (ii) What is the expected profile of the participants (speakers + audience)? (iii) How will the workshop be advertised? Having a clear target audience and plan to engage that group has proven to be critical in attracting high quality submissions and organizing a successful workshop. Format of the workshop: Provide a short overview of the format by indicating if the workshop: (i) will have peer reviewed papers in the proceedings? (ii) will be half day or full day long? (iii) will have a keynote talk? If yes, provide a tentative list of speakers; (iv) will have a panel? If yes, provide the topic and the potential panelists? (v) will have external (e.g., NSF) support for student participants. October 22-25, 2019* Deep learning approaches have caused tremendous advances in many areas of computer science. Deep learning is a branch of machine learning where the learning process is done using deep and complex architectures such as recurrent convolutional artificial neural networks. Many computer science applications have utilized deep learning such as computer vision, speech recognition, natural language processing, sentiment analysis, social network analysis, and robotics. The success of deep learning enabled the application of learning models such as reinforcement learning in which the learning process is only done by trial-and-error, solely from actions rewards or punishments. Deep reinforcement learning come to create systems that can learn how to adapt in the real world. As deep learning utilizes deep and complex architectures, the learning process usually is time and effort consuming and need huge labeled data sets. This inspired the introduction of transfer and multi-task learning approaches to better exploit the available data during training and adapt previously learned knowledge to emerging domains, tasks, or applications. Despite the fact that many research activities is ongoing in these areas, many challenging are still unsolved. This workshop will bring together researchers working on deep learning, working on the intersection of deep learning and reinforcement learning, and/or using transfer learning to simplify deep leaning, and it will help researchers with expertise in one of these fields to learn about the others. The workshop also aims to bridge the gap between theories and practices by providing the researchers and practitioners the opportunity to share ideas and discuss and criticize current theories and results.
