*IEEE Transactions on Industrial Informatics* *CALL FOR PAPERS* *for Special Section on* *Sustainable and Intelligent Precision Agriculture* *Theme:* Since the green revolution in the mid-20th century, we have entered into the era of industrial agriculture, in which farming activities are industrialized and specialization is applied to all steps during food production of livestock, poultry, fish and crops. Industrial agriculture has many advantages. For example, the use of specialized machinery lightens farmer’s labor intensity. Large-scale monoculture crops planting and intensive farming achieve higher food yields with lower price. In plant factory, the cultivation environment can be artificially controlled, so the vegetables grow faster than in outdoor conditions. However, industrial agriculture also causes some negative impacts on ecological system due to the high energy consumption and serious environmental degradation. Tractors, combines, cultivators and other agricultural machinery not only consume much fossil fuels but also degrade soil. The use of too much synthetic fertilizers and pesticides contaminate local rivers and water sources. Water is often overused in the irrigation stage. Industry 4.0, that built on leading-edge technologies, will be a transforming force to reshape the industrial agriculture. Through wireless sensor network, unmanned aerial vehicle and satellite imagery, the ubiquitous sensing can collect valuable data during food production. Precision agriculture helps to save use of fertilizer and water. Solar photovoltaic power harvesting and wireless energy transfer is a key approach to reduce the consumption of fossil fuels. Smart microclimate control in greenhouse and plant factory enables deep understanding on the interaction between gene, environment and phenotype. Artificial intelligence and big data makes the industrial agriculture more intelligent. Tutorials at GECCO will be presented by domain experts to cover current topics relevant to evolutionary computation researchers and practitioners. Each tutorial will be 110 minutes long. We encourage the inclusion of interactive activities and demos. Tutorials will be free to all GECCO attendees. It is expected that all the instructors involved in a tutorial will attend the conference. One instructor/presenter of each accepted tutorial will be able to register for GECCO at half the regular rate. (The discount can be divided among tutorial instructors if there are more than one. Call for Technical Sessions 15th Conference on Computer Science and Information Systems (FedCSIS 2020) Sofia, Bulgaria, 6-9 September 2020 https://fedcsis.org/2020/ The 15th Conference on Computer Science and Information Systems (FedCSIS 2020) cordially invites you to contribute a Technical Session (conference, symposium, workshop, consortium meeting, project dissemination meeting, special session, etc.). The FedCSIS conferences consist of five Tracks that contain Technical Sessions. Many of them are recurring yearly events, but we solicit and welcome proposals for new Technical Sessions until November 12, 2019. Moreover, existing events that would like to join the FedCSIS conference series, are also welcome. The Technical Sessions can run over any span of time within the conference dates; from half-day to four days. FedCSIS is a large rigorous scientific conference staged across Europe. Annually, it attracts ~400 submissions from ~40 countries from around the world. Papers are accepted in three categories: regular (full and short), position, and communication. All regular, presented, papers are submitted to IEEE Xplore Digital Library, and many are offered post-publication opportunities (journals, Springer volumes, etc.) after appropriate extensions and changes. Position and communication papers are published in separate volumes of the Annals of Computer Science and Information systems series. All papers are published with ISBN, ISSN and DOI numbers, and submitted to, and indexed in, most influential indexing services. Since 2012, FedCSIS Proceedings are indexed in SCOPUS and Web of Science. Any newly proposed Technical Session will be evaluated on the basis of scientific/technical interest and/or its relevance to practitioners in its topics, the clarity of the proposal in addressing the requested information, the innovativeness of the topics, and a “value-added” to the denoted FedCSIS track, i.e.: * Artificial Intelligence and Applications * Computer Science and Systems * Network Systems and Applications * Information Technology for Management, Business & Society * Software and Systems Development Call for Papers for Technical Sessions will be announced by three means: (1) by FedCSIS Chairs, in generic Calls for Conference Papers, to reach out to the computer science and information system researchers at large; (2) by Track Chairs, in Calls for Track Papers, to reach out to the researchers specifically interested in track topics; (3) by Technical Session Chairs, in Calls for Technical Session Papers, to reach out to the professional communities involved in research addressed by their Technical Session. In parallel, production deployment, model complexity and diversity pushed for higher productivity systems, more powerful programming abstractions, software and system architectures, dedicated runtime systems and numerical libraries, deployment and analysis tools. Deep learning models are generally memory and computationally intensive, for both training and inference. Accelerating these operations has obvious advantages, first by reducing the energy consumption (e.g. in data centers), and secondly, making these models usable on smaller devices at the edge of the Internet. In addition, while convolutional neural networks have motivated much of this effort, numerous applications and models involve a wider variety of operations, network architectures, and data processing. These applications and models permanently challenge computer architecture, the system stack, and programming abstractions. Hence we need to push AI toward sensors and actuators. I will give an overview of recent efforts in developing systems of-on-chips based on open source hardware and capable of significant analytics and AI functions "at the extreme edge", i.e. within the limited power budget of traditional microcontrollers that can be co-located and integrated with the sensors/actuators themselves. These open, extreme edge AI platforms create an exciting playground for research and innovation. Bio: Luca Benini holds the chair of digital Circuits and systems at ETHZ and is Full Professor at the Universita di Bologna. He received a PhD from Stanford University. In 2009-2012 he served as chief architect in STmicroelectronics France. Dr. Benini's research interests are in energy-efficient computing systems design, from embedded to high-performance. He is also active in the design of ultra-low power VLSI Circuits and smart sensing micro-systems. He has published more than 1000 peer-reviewed papers and five books. He is an ERC-advanced grant winner, a Fellow of the IEEE, of the ACM and a member of the Academia Europaea. He is the recipient of the 2016 IEEE CAS Mac Van Valkenburg award and of the 2019 IEEE TCAD Donald O. Pederson Best Paper Award. --- * Invited speaker: Carole-Jean Wu (Facebook AI, Arizona State University) Title: Machine Learning at Scale Abstract: Machine learning systems are being widely deployed in production datacenter infrastructure and over billions of edge devices. This talk seeks to address key system design challenges when scaling machine learning solutions to billions of people. What are key similarities and differences between cloud and edge infrastructure? The talk will conclude with open system research directions for deploying machine learning at scale. Bio: Carole-Jean Wu is a Research Scientist at Facebook’s AI Infrastructure Research. She is also a tenured Associate Professor of CSE in Arizona State University. Carole-Jean’s research focuses in Computer and System Architectures. More recently, her research has pivoted into designing systems for machine learning. She is the leading author of “Machine Learning at Facebook: Understanding Inference at the Edge” that presents unique design challenges faced when deploying ML solutions at scale to the edge, from over billions of smartphones to Facebook’s virtual reality platforms. Carole-Jean received her Ph.D. and M.A. from Princeton and B.Sc. from Cornell. --- * Invited speaker: Albert Cohen (Google, Paris) Title:Abstractions, Algorithms and Infrastructure for Post-Moore Optimizing Compilers Abstract: MLIR is a recently announced open source infrastructure to accelerate innovation in machine learning (ML) and high-performance computing (HPC). It addresses the growing software and hardware fragmentation across machine learning frameworks, enabling machine learning models to be consistently represented and executed on any type of hardware. It also unifies graph representations and operators for ML and HPC. It facilitates the design and implementation of code generators, translators and optimizations at different levels of abstraction and also across application domains, hardware targets and execution environments. We will share our vision, progress and plans in the MLIR project, zooming in on graph-level and loop nest optimization as illustrative examples. Bio: Albert Cohen is a research scientist at Google. He worked as a research scientist at Inria from 2000 to 2018. He graduated from École Normale Supérieure de Lyon and received his PhD from the University of Versailles in 1999 (awarded two national prizes). He has also been a visiting scholar at the University of Illinois, an invited professor at Philips Research, and a visiting scientist at Facebook Artificial Intelligence Research. Albert Cohen works on parallelizing and optimizing compilers, parallel programming languages and systems, and synchronous programming for reactive control systems. He served as the general or program chair of some of the main conferences in the area and a member of the editorial board of two journals. He co-authored more than 180 peer-reviewed papers and has been the advisor for 26 PhD theses. Several research projects led by Albert Cohen resulted in effective transfer to production compilers and programming environments. --- * Invited speaker: Rune Holm (Arm) Title: Big neural networks in small spaces; Towards end-to-end optimisation for ML at the edge Abstract: Neural networks have taken over use case after use case, from image recognition, speech recognition, image enhancement to driving cars, and show no sign of letting up. Yet so many of these use cases are done by acquiring data and sending it off to the cloud for inference. On-device ML brings unprecedented capabilities and opportunities to edge devices with improved privacy, security, and reliability. This talk explores the many aspects of system optimisation for edge ML, from training-time optimisation, to the compilation of neural networks, to the design of machine learning hardware, and looks at ways to save execution time and memory footprint while preserving accuracy. Bio: Rune Holm has been part of the semiconductor industry for more than a decade. He started out on Mali GPUs, doing GPU microarchitecture and designing shader compilers for VLIW cores. He then moved on to research into experimental GPGPU designs and architectures targeting HPC, machine learning and computer vision. With increased throughput demand and popularity of computational biology tools, reducing time-to-solution during computational analysis has become a significant challenge in the path to scientific discovery. Conventional computer architecture has been proven to be inefficient for computational biology and bioinformatics tasks. For example, 3rd generation de-novo assembly of a human genome may take hundreds of hours on a high performance computer. Hence, computational biology and bioinformatics increasingly rely on hardware accelerators. In a typical application, the dominant portion of the runtime is spent in a small number of computational kernels, making it an excellent target for hardware acceleration. The combination of increasingly large datasets and high performance computing requirements makes computational biology a prime candidate to benefit from accelerator architecture research. Potential directions include 3D integration, near-data processing, automata processing and reconfigurable architectures. This workshop will focus on the architecture and design of hardware accelerators for computational biology and bioinformatics problems. We plan to present and discuss a variety of acceleration techniques, accelerator architectures and their implications on the development of computational biology. April 20-23, 2020 Technically Co-Sponsored by IEEE France Section *SDS 2020 CFP:* Next generation cloud systems will require a paradigm shift in how they are constructed and managed. Conventional control and management platforms are facing considerable challenges regarding flexibility, dependability and security that next generation systems will require. The cloud computing paradigm has gone part of the way towards alleviating some of the problems associated with resource allocation, utilization and managements (e.g., via elasticity). However, many of the elements of a well-designed cloud environment remain “stiff” and hard to modify and adapt in an integrated fashion. This includes underlying networking topologies, many aspects of the user control over IaaS, PaaS or SaaS layers when such is needed, construction of XaaS services, provenance and meta-data collection, and so on. In many situations the problem may be because service abstraction is inadequate. Software Defined Systems (SDS) are systems that have added software components which help abstract actual IT equipment and other layers. One classical example, of course, are hypervisors. Such separation provides a great opportunity for system administrators to more easily construct and managing their systems through flexible software layers. Software Defined Systems include Software Defined Networking (SDN), Software Defined Storage, Software Defined Servers (Virtualization), Software Defined Datacenters (SDD), Software Defined Security (SDSec), and ultimately Software Defined Clouds (SDCloud) to name a few possibilities. Individual solutions and seamless integration of these abstractions remains in many respects a challenge. After the high success of the previous editions (SDS'2014, SDS'2015, SDS'2016, SDS'2017, SDS'2018, SDS' 2019), The Seventh International conference on Software Defined Systems 2020 (SDS'2020) will continue to be a forum for scientists, researchers, students, and practitioners to present their latest research results, ideas, and developments in the area of software defined systems – both components and their integration - and by implication advancement of next generation clouds. SDS 2020 aims to investigate the opportunities and in all aspects of Software Defined Systems. In addition, it seeks for novel contributions that help mitigating SDS challenges. All papers should be in PDF format, and submitted electronically at Paper Submission Link. A full paper can be up to 8 pages (including all figures, tables and references). Submitted papers must present original unpublished research that is not currently under review for any other conference or journal. Papers not following these guidelines may be rejected without review. Also submissions received after the due date, exceeding length limit, or not appropriately structured may also not be considered. Authors may contact the Program Chair for further information or clarification. All submissions are peer-reviewed by at least three reviewers. Accepted papers will appear in the FMEC Proceeding, and be published by the IEEE Computer Society Conference Publishing Services and be submitted to IEEE Xplore for inclusion.
