Despite their frequently proven power and performance benefits, designing for FPGAs is mostly an engineering discipline carried out by highly trained specialists. With recent progress in high-level synthesis, a first important step towards bringing FPGA technology to potentially millions of software developers was taken. Topics of Interest ================== The way in which IT resources and services are being provisioned is currently in flux. Advances in distributed systems technology have allowed for the provisioning of services on an unprecedented scale and with increasing flexibility. Businesses have started to embrace models based on this technology wherein third-party services, which can be acquired with minimal service provider interaction, replace or complement those services that are managed internally. However, enterprises, academia, and policy makers have only started to grasp the economic implications of this evolution. As a global market for infrastructure, platform, and software services emerges, the need for understanding and dealing with these implications is quickly growing. In addition, a multitude of new challenges arise. These are inherently multidisciplinary and relate to aspects such as the operation and structure of service markets, the alignment of cost, revenue and quality-related objectives when taking on a service consumer or provider role, the adoption of these new technologies on a wide scale, the creation of innovative business models, and the optimization of value chains. These challenges do not exclusively emerge in the IT field. An example is the coordinated operation of the next generation smart electricity grids that are characterized by distributed generation facilities, new consumption patterns, and opportunities for transactive energy. The alignment of IT with social networks in order to increase efficiency as well as collect and analyze user data is another. GECON invites researchers and practitioners from industry to present and discuss economics-related issues and solutions associated with these challenges. Analysis of textual logs and numeric data produced under real workload conditions by applications, systems, and networks, intrusion detection systems, and issue trackers plays a key role for engineers and practitioners. Nevertheless, in spite of decades of research and methodological advances, data analysis in this specific area keeps posing challenging research questions due to the heterogeneity, volume and velocity of the collected data, the lack of systematic end-to-end analysis procedures, the increasing diversity of analysis objectives and emerging application domains in critical areas. GOALS The workshop aims to concentrate ideas and contributions from academic and industrial organizations addressing reliability and security aspects of computer systems and networks through data analysis. The past RSDA edition has established a forum to stimulate scientific research and discuss analysis techniques, procedures and tools that are currently adopted to manage, analyze or evaluate reliability and security data sets. The workshop on advances in software and hardware for big data to knowledge discovery aims to bridge latest technology development in hardware and software with end users of big data. The workshop will discuss issues that concern domain researchers about the latest software and hardware technologies, such as performance evaluation, optimizations, accessibility and usability of new technologies. We would like to invite cyber-infrastructure specialists and computer scientist to share their experience with latest hardware and software advancements as well as data scientists to share their experiences and perspectives in using those technologies for data driven discovery. Fueled by the big data analytics needs, new computing and storage technologies are developing rapidly and pushing for new high-end hardware geared toward big data problems. While those technologies have the potential to greatly improve effectiveness of big data analytics, the cost and sophistications of those technology and limited initial application support often make them inaccessible to the end users and not fully utilized in academia years later. Meanwhile, comprehensive analytic software environment and platform, such as R and Python, have become increasingly popular open-source platform for data analysis. Those software not only provides collection of analytic methods but also has the potential to utilize new hardware transparently and ease the efforts required from the end users. However, most data scientists have only had experience with small to medium-sized data; and now the size of Big Data poses its own challenges. It is therefore a critical issue to make the latest technology advancements in software and hardware accessible and usable to the domain scientists in a timely manner, especially those in fields traditionally not strong in computation and programming. The topics of the workshop are centered on the accessibility and applicability of the latest hardware and software to practical domain problems. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to: * Adopting hardware technology, such as GPGPU, Xeon Phi etc, for Big Data analytics * Application and use cases in using cyber-infrastructure for Big Data in sciences and engineering * Big data and interactive analysis languages (e.g., R, Python, and Matlab) * New advances in hardware technology. * Novel software platforms and models for big data collection management and analysis. * Performance tuning with new hardware infrastructure and software platform * Search and data retrieval on large-scale data set * Service oriented architectures to enable data science * Software and platform for big data analysis and visualization. (http://cs.iupui.edu/~fgsong/biggraphsworkshop) Important Dates: Aug 30, 2014: Due date for workshop papers submission Sept 20, 2014: Notification of paper acceptance to authors Oct 5, 2014: Camera-ready of accepted papers The First International Workshop on “High Performance Big Graph Data Management, Analysis, and Mining” will be held in conjunction with IEEE BigData'14 in Washington DC, USA in October 2014. Modern Big Data increasingly appears in the form of complex graphs and networks. Examples include the physical Internet, the world wide web, online social networks, phone networks, and biological networks. In addition to their massive sizes, these graphs are dynamic, noisy, and sometimes transient. They also conform to all five Vs (Volume, Velocity, Variety, Value and Veracity) that define Big Data. However, many graph-related problems are computationally difficult, and thus big graph data brings unique challenges, as well as numerous opportunities for researchers, to solve various problems that are significant to our communities. Big graph problems are currently solved using several complementary paradigms. The most popular approach is perhaps by exploiting parallelism, through specialized algorithms for supercomputers, shared-memory multicore and manycore systems, and heterogeneous CPU-GPU systems. However, since real-world graphs are sparse and highly irregular, there are very few parallel implementations that can actually deliver high performance. The major challenges to scaling and efficiency include irregular data dependencies, poor locality, and high synchronization costs of current approaches. In addition to parallelism, researchers are developing approximation algorithms that use sampling for compressing and summarizing graph data. Streaming algorithms are also being considered for scenarios where the rate of updates is too fast to process the entire graph in a single pass. Further, out-of-core algorithms are necessary for massive graphs that do not fit in the main memory of a typical system. Researchers can use graph-based solutions for solving problems from many diverse disciplines, including routing and transportation, social networks, bioinformatics, computational science, health care, security and intelligence analysis. This workshop aims to bring together researchers from different paradigms solving big graph problems under a unified platform for sharing their work and exchanging ideas. We are soliciting novel and original research contributions related to big graph data management, analysis, and mining (algorithms, software systems, applications, best practices, performance). Significant work-in-progress papers are also encouraged. Papers can be from any of the following areas including but not limited to: ● Parallel algorithms for big graph analysis on HPC systems ● Heterogeneous CPU-GPU solutions to solve big graph problems ● Extreme-scale computing for large graph, tensor, and network problems ● Sampling and summarization of large graphs ● Graph algorithms for large-scale scientific computing problems ● Graph clustering, partitioning, and classification methods ● Scalable graph topology measurement: diameter approximation, eigenvalues, triangle and graphlet counting ● Parallel algorithms for computing graph kernels ● Inference on Large graph data ● Graph evolution and dynamic graph models ● Graph databases, novel querying and indexing strategies for RDF data ● Novel applications of big graph problems in bioinformatics, health care, security, and social networks ● New software systems and runtime systems for big graph data mining Papers should be at maximum 8 pages long, formatted using the style of Big-Data 2014 conference proceedings.
