Data reduction is becoming an indispensable technique in many domains because it can offer a great capability to reduce the data size by one or even two orders of magnitude, significantly saving the memory/storage space, mitigating the I/O burden, reducing communication time, and improving the energy/power efficiency in various parallel and distributed environments, such as high-performance computing (HPC), cloud computing, edge computing, and Internet-of-Things (IoT). An HPC system, for instance, is expected to have a computational capability of floating-point operations per second, and large-scale HPC scientific applications may generate vast volumes of data (several orders of magnitude larger than the available storage space) for post-analysis. Moreover, runtime memory footprint and communication could be non-negligible bottlenecks of current HPC systems. Tackling the big data reduction research requires expertise from computer science, mathematics, and application domains to study the problem holistically, and develop solutions and harden software tools that can be used by production applications. Specifically, the big-data computing community needs to understand a clear yet complex relationship between application design, data analysis and reduction methods, programming models, system software, hardware, and other elements of a next-generation large-scale computing infrastructure, especially given constraints on applicability, fidelity, performance portability, and energy efficiency. New data reduction techniques also need to be explored and developed continuously to suit emerging applications and diverse use cases. All papers accepted for this workshop will be included in the Workshop Proceedings published by the IEEE Computer Society Press, made available at the IEEE BigData Conference.    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ WORKSHOP SCOPE  There are at least three significant research topics that the community is striving to answer: (1) whether several orders of magnitude of data reduction is possible for extreme-scale sciences; (2) understanding the trade-off between the performance and accuracy of data reduction; and (3) solutions to effectively reduce data size while preserving the information inside the big datasets. The goal of this workshop is to provide a focused venue for researchers in all aspects of data reduction in all related communities to present their research results, exchange ideas, identify new research directions, and foster new collaborations within the community. December 12-15, 2022 Technically Co-Sponsored by IEEE France Section *SDS 2022 CFP:* Next generation cloud systems will require a paradigm shift in how they are constructed and managed. Conventional control and management platforms are facing considerable challenges regarding flexibility, dependability and security that next generation systems will require. The cloud computing paradigm has gone part of the way towards alleviating some of the problems associated with resource allocation, utilization and management (e.g., via elasticity). However, many of the elements of a well-designed cloud environment remain “stiff” and hard to modify and adapt in an integrated fashion. This includes underlying networking topologies, many aspects of the user control over IaaS, PaaS or SaaS layers when such is needed, construction of XaaS services, provenance and meta-data collection, and so on. In many situations the problem may be because service abstraction is inadequate. Software Defined Systems (SDS) are systems that have added software components which help abstract actual IT equipment and other layers. One classical example, of course, are hypervisors. Such separation provides a great opportunity for system administrators to more easily construct and managing their systems through flexible software layers. Software Defined Systems include Software Defined Networking (SDN), Software Defined Storage, Software Defined Servers (Virtualization), Software Defined Datacenters (SDD), Software Defined Security (SDSec), and ultimately Software Defined Clouds (SDCloud) to name a few possibilities. Individual solutions and seamless integration of these abstractions remains in many respects a challenge. After the high success of the previous editions (SDS'2014, SDS'2015, SDS'2016, SDS'2017, SDS'2018, SDS' 2019, SDS' 2020 and SDS' 2021), The Ninth International conference on Software Defined Systems (SDS'2022) will continue to be a forum for scientists, researchers, students, and practitioners to present their latest research results, ideas, and developments in the area of software defined systems – both components and their integration - and by implication advancement of next generation clouds. New applications, such as virtual reality and smart building control, have emerged due to the large number of resources and services brought by cloud computing. However, the delay-sensitive applications face the problem of large latency, especially when several smart devices and objects are getting involved in human’s life such as the case of smart cities or Internet of Things. Therefore, cloud computing is unable to meet the requirements of low latency, location awareness, and mobility support. To solve this problem, researchers have introduced a trusted and dependable solution through the Fog and the Mobile Edge Computing (FMEC) to put the services and resources of the cloud closer to users, which facilitates the leveraging of available services and resources in the edge networks. By this, we are moving from the core (cloud data centers) to the edge of the network closer to the users. FMEC dependability is based on providing user centric service. The purpose of Fog and the Mobile Edge Computing is to run the heavy real-time applications at the network edge directly using the billions of connected mobile devices. Several features enable the Fog and the Mobile Edge Computing to be a perfect paradigm to the aforementioned purpose, which are the dense geographical deployment of servers, supporting mobility and the closeness to users. As in every new technology, some challenges face the vision of the Fog and the Mobile Edge Computing, which are the administrative policies and security concerns (i.e. secure data storage, secure computation, network security, data privacy, usage privacy, location privacy, etc). FMEC 2022 conference aims to investigate the opportunities and requirements for Mobile Edge Computing dominance. In addition, it seeks for novel contributions that help mitigating Mobile Edge Computing challenges. Floating point computation in science and engineering has a history of “oversolving” relative to expectations for many models. So often are real datatypes defaulted to double precision that GPUs did not gain wide acceptance until they provided in hardware operations not required in their original domain of graphics. Indeed, the condition number of discretizations of the Laplacian reaches the reciprocal of unit roundoff for single precision with just a thousand uniformly spaced points per dimension. However, many operations considered at a blockwise level allow for lower precision and many blocks can be approximated with low rank near equivalents. This leads to smaller memory footprint, which implies higher residency on memory hierarchies, leading in turn to less time and energy spent on data copying, which may even dwarf the savings from fewer and cheaper flops. We provide examples from several application domains, including a preview of a 2022 Gordon Bell finalist computation that benefits from both blockwise lower precisions and lower ranks. Bio: David Keyes is a professor of applied mathematics, computer science, and mechanical engineering at the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST), where he directs the Extreme Computing Research Center, and where he was founding Dean in 2009. He is also Adjunct Professor of applied mathematics at Columbia and an affiliate of several US national labs. He earned a BSE in aerospace and mechanical sciences from Princeton in 1978 and a PhD in applied mathematics from Harvard in 1984. He works at the interfaces between parallel computing and the numerical analysis of PDEs and spatial statistics, with a focus on scalable implicit solvers and exploiting data sparsity. He helped develop and popularize the Newton-Krylov-Schwarz (NKS) and Additive Schwarz Preconditioned Inexact Newton (ASPIN) methods. He has been awarded the ACM Gordon Bell Prize and the IEEE Sidney Fernbach Prize and is a fellow of the SIAM, AMS, and AAAS. The manuscripts should be no longer than 10 pages including all figures/tables and references. Submitted papers should not be previously published in or be under consideration for publication in another conference or journal. Paper titles and/or author names cannot be changed and/or added to the papers once papers are submitted (and in the camera-ready version if accepted). The Program Committee reserves the right to not review papers that either exceed the length specification or have been submitted or published elsewhere. Submissions must include a title, abstract, keywords, author(s) and affiliation(s) with postal and e-mail addresses. Note: ICCCN'23 will select the Best Paper and a runner-up paper to recognize the research quality and excellence. Review and Publication of Manuscripts: Submitted papers will be reviewed by the TPC and judged on originality, technical correctness, relevance, and quality of presentation. An accepted paper must be presented at the conference venue by a registered author at the full registration rate. Each full registration covers up to two conference papers authored by the registered author. Accepted and presented papers will be published in the conference proceedings. Workshops: ICCCN 2023 workshops are exciting forums to present, discuss, and formulate specialize topics and emerging hot research topics (new areas, new problems or new methods). The workshops offer a perspective distinct from and complementary to the research themes of the main conference. Workshop papers should be no longer than 7 pages including all figures/tables and references. Poster Papers: ICCCN 2023 provides an opportunity to present in-progress work in the fields of computer communications and networks. Early implementations, prototypes, work-in-progress systems/applications as well as commercial products that are related to the topics are welcome. Presenting a poster is an effective way to obtain early and valuable feedback from a knowledgeable crowd at the conference. Posters must be formatted in standard IEEE camera-ready format (double-column, 10-pt font). Each poster submission must be no longer than 2 pages including all figures/tables and references.
