# Call For Participation HPC Systems Professionals Workshop - HPCSYSPROS20 Held in conjunction with SC20: The International Conference on High Performance Computing, Networking, Storage, and Analysis. Standing up these systems and keeping them running require novel solutions that are unique to high performance computing. The success of any supercomputing center depends on stable and reliable systems, and HPC Systems Professionals are crucial to that success. The Fifth Annual HPC Systems Professionals Workshop will bring together systems administrators, systems architects, and systems analysts in order to share best practices, discuss cutting-edge technologies, and advance the state-of-the-practice for HPC systems. This CFP requests that participants submit either papers, slide presentations, or 5-minute Lightning Talk proposals along with reproducible artifacts (code segments, test suites, configuration management templates) which can be made available to the community for use. Authors are invited to submit original, high-quality papers, presentations, and artifacts with an emphasis on solutions that can be implemented by other members of the HPC systems community. All submissions should be in PDF format. Papers should be between 6 and 8 pages including tables, figures and appendices, but excluding references. Slide decks should consist of less than 30 slides. Lightning Talks should be submitted as a 1-2 paragraph abstract for a talk of approximately 5 minutes in length. Artifact descriptions should be described in 1-2 pages in length. All submissions should be formatted according to the SC Proceedings template. Per SC policy, margins and font sizes should not be modified. Papers submitted with an artifact are required to have an appended artifact descriptor as a part of the requirements for reproducibility. ## Topics of Interest Topics of interest include, but are not limited to: * Cluster configuration and software management * Cybersecurity and data protection * Performance tuning and benchmarking * Monitoring, Mean-time-to-failure, ROI, or Resource utilization * Resource manager and job scheduler configuration * HPC storage solutions * Virtualization and Clouds * Elastic workloads or optimizations for workload types (e.g., bioinformatics, new-user cases) * Web-based cluster front ends ## Artifact Types * Architecture Descriptions would include an interesting network, storage or system architecture, or a hybrid thereof at a data-center level. It would be documented by multiple diagrams describing the architecture and a four page description of the architecture and why it is interesting. * Small Middleware or Systems Software would include an artifact of code such as a Bash or Python Script. Additionally, there should be strong documentation that would make the artifact reproducible and a two page abstract additional to the artifact and documentation. * System Configuration and Configuration Management would include interesting configuration or configuration management and the interactions between multiple configured applications. Examples of this may be a Puppet module, a config file that helps do something interesting, or more likely a group of config files and configuration management. Documentation for reproducing the artifact on a system as well as a two page abstract would be required. We will also accept proposals for different types of artifacts from those that have been listed. If there is a type of artifact that is not listed that is a high-quality artifact with an emphasis on reproducibility and implementation, we invite you to propose it to the committee. If the committee agrees, we will amend the CFP to reflect the new artifact and the requirements for the artifact. ## Submissions We will use Linklings for all submissions to the workshop, and we will use the review system in Linklings for all feedback. For artifacts, we will require that submitters submit a Git URL at a specific commit that the committee can clone and review. The committee will review and accept pull requests for updates during the different stages of review. This includes the main conference and workshops. The accepted workshop papers must be presented by one of the authors in order to be included in the proceedings. There will be a single minimal registration fee for each accepted paper in order to cover expenses associated with organization and proceedings publication. Lastly, the preferred presentation format for the workshop will be via a streaming presentation, with slides and pre-recorded video presentations used in exceptional situations. Overview: Resilience is a critical challenge as high performance computing (HPC) systems continue to increase component counts, individual component reliability decreases (such as due to shrinking process technology and near-threshold voltage (NTV) operation), hardware complexity increases (such as due to heterogeneous computing) and software complexity increases (such as due to complex data- and workflows, real-time requirements and integration of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies with traditional applications). Correctness and execution efficiency, in spite of faults, errors, and failures, is essential to ensure the success of the HPC systems, cluster computing environments, Grid computing infrastructures, and Cloud computing services. The impact of faults, errors, and failures in such HPC systems can range from financial losses due to system downtime (sometimes several tens-of-thousands of Dollars per lost system-hour), to financial losses due to unnecessary overprovision (acquisition and operating costs), to financial losses and legal liabilities due to erroneous or delayed output. The emergence of AI technology opens up new possibilities, but also new problems. Using AI technology for operational intelligence that enables resilience in HPC systems and centers is a complex control problem, while designing resilient AI technology for HPC applications is a difficult algorithmic problem. Resilience for HPC systems encompasses a wide spectrum of fundamental and applied research and development, including theoretical foundations, error/failure and anomaly detection, monitoring and control, end-to-end data integrity, enabling infrastructure, and resilient algorithms. This workshop brings together experts in the community to further research and development in HPC resilience and to facilitate exchanges across the computational paradigms of extreme-scale HPC, cluster computing, Grid computing, and Cloud computing. Submission Guidelines: Authors are invited to submit papers electronically in English in PDF format. Submitted manuscripts should be structured as technical papers and BETWEEN 10 AND 12 PAGES, including figures, tables and references, using Springer's Lecture Notes in Computer Science (LNCS) format at <http://www.springer.com/computer/lncs?SGWID=0-164-6-793341-0>. The most appealing realization of such convergence is the application of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) to optimize network functions. The latter has generated an increasing interest from academia and industry paving the path for the transformation from the 5G paradigm "connected things" into a "connected intelligence" vision for beyond 5G and 6G mobile networks. To this end, the role of AI/ML is to support zero-touch configuration and orchestration, thereby enabling self-configuration and self-optimization of the mobile network. Mobile networks are indeed becoming increasingly complex, heterogeneous, dynamic and dense, which makes extremely hard to model correctly their behavior. Model-free solutions that AI enable can overcome such challenge. Nowadays, the most important stakeholders such as private companies, public agencies, research communities and citizens rely on the cloud for a number of purposes, stemming from sharing hardware infrastructures to software, data, and sensing services. The services designed for complex scenarios like Multi-Access Edge Computing (MEC), smart cities, and the upcoming Industry 4.0, pave the path for a new era of the cloud. The complexity of human dynamics in a city can be better analyzed by decentralizing the infrastructure, integrating and opening the data and sharing the services. The MEC paradigm, standardized by ETSI, is a key enabling technology for upcoming 5G networks, whereby applications and network functions are hosted in edge cloud data centers. By being closer to the end-user, besides better supporting low-latency applications, MEC systems are a candidate architecture for such a decentralized, context-aware infrastructure. Through sensing as a service processes, crowd-sensed data is made available to the cloud stakeholders. Some of them like citizens become data contributors, customers and service consumers at the same time. Despite such a rapid (re-)evolution of cloud systems, it remains unclear whether current solutions are able to support these emergent application scenarios. In this context, artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) can provide deeper knowledge of the behavior of edge systems to shape the development of autonomic orchestration and networking. The MoCS workshop started following the "cloud" stream 9 years ago. The focus of the 10th MoCS edition is in the convergence of cloud paradigm in form of MEC to support low-latency, context-aware applications for complex scenarios like smart cities and learning-driven approaches for urban planning.
