It is intended to provide a venue for the broader HPC community to Further understand OpenPOWER technologies and discuss how they can be Harnessed for HPC applications needs. The latest advances in OpenPOWER and how they might be used to address challenges regarding system architecture, networking, memory designs, exploitation of accelerators, programming models, and porting applications are of current interest within the HPC community and this workshop. The workshop is currently planned as a half-day workshop, but may be extended to a full-day workshop. Full papers or work-in-progress reports are sought that are within the Scope of the workshop and related to the OpenPOWER ecosystem. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to: * Porting applications experiences to OpenPOWER nodes to exploit its HPC and data analytics capabilities * Designs and use models for FPGA-accelerated applications * Co-designing the HPC software stack (scientific libraries, compilers, runtimes) * Programming models for HPC and data analytics, including hybrid heterogeneous programming (e.g. MPI with OpenCL, OpenACC, CUDA, OpenMP4) models, DSLs, PGAS, and exascale runtimes * Tools eco-system to improve productivity on OpenPOWER architectures (compilers, performance analysis, auto-tuning, debugging, verification, static analysis tools) * System architectural choices including memory designs, networking * Low level communication APIs, I/O frameworks * Runtime environments and schedulers * Benchmarking and validation studies on OpenPOWER architectures All contributions are planned to be published in ISC¹16 Joint Workshop Proceeding Volume. Scope: The data needs of scientific as well as commercial applications from a diverse range of fields have been increasing exponentially over the recent years. This increase in the demand for large-scale data processing has necessitated collaboration and sharing of data collections among the world's leading education, research, and industrial institutions and use of distributed resources owned by collaborating parties. In a widely distributed environment, data is often not locally accessible and has thus to be remotely retrieved and stored. While traditional distributed systems work well for computation that requires limited data handling, they may fail in unexpected ways when the computation accesses, creates, and moves large amounts of data especially over wide-area networks. Further, data accessed and created is often poorly described, lacking both metadata and provenance. Scientists, researchers, and application developers are often forced to solve basic data-handling issues, such as physically locating data, how to access it, and/or how to move it to visualization and/or compute resources for further analysis. This workshop will focus on the challenges imposed by data-intensive applications on distributed systems, and on the different state-of-the-art solutions proposed to overcome these challenges. It will bring together the collaborative and distributed computing community and the data management community in an effort to generate productive conversations on the planning, management, and scheduling of data handling tasks and data storage resources. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to: Data-intensive applications and their challenges Data clouds, data grids, and data centers New architectures for data-intensive computing Data virtualization, interoperability, and federation Data-aware toolkits and middleware Dynamic data-driven science Data collection, provenance, and metadata Network support for data-intensive computing Remote and distributed visualization of large-scale data Data archives, digital libraries, and preservation Service oriented architectures for data-intensive computing Data privacy and protection in a collaborative environment Peer-to-peer data movement and data streaming Scientific breakthrough enabled by DIDC Future research challenges in data-intensive computing Energy-efficient data-intensive systems New programming models for data-intensive computing Hot Topics Session: In addition to regular papers track, DIDC 2016 is soliciting papers for a special Hot Topics session. Hot Topics papers are expected to discuss current trends and upcoming challenges in data-intensive distributed computing. Authors will be given short presentation slots during the workshop. Submissions should come with initial results or observations supporting the presented approach or current challenges. An ideal paper should initiate a lively discussion based on clearly stated arguments, orthogonal approaches, original ideas, or future problems in data-intensive distributed computing. Call for Papers Hardware-software codesign involves the concurrent design of hardware and software components of complex computer systems, whereby application requirements influence architecture design and hardware constraints influence design of algorithms and software. High Performance Computing (HPC) is facing daunting challenges as we move towards the exascale era, with the necessity of designing systems that run large-scale simulations with high performance while meeting cost and energy consumption constraints. Effective codesign requires collaboration between domain scientists, applied mathematicians, computer scientists, and hardware architects. Representative proxy applications, ranging from kernels to miniapplications, must be extracted from and validated against full applications to allow for evaluation on new and emerging hardware architectures. Hardware must be designed to meet application requirements while meeting cost constraints. Finally, system software must be designed that supports the programming and execution models required for highly concurrent, complex, and heterogeneous applications and systems. We solicit high quality, original research articles as well as review articles focused on the interrelationships between algorithms/applications, systems software, and hardware and on methodologies and tools for hardware-software codesign for HPC. There are driving needs to generate values from big data. However, the sheer volume of big data requires significant storage capacity, transmission bandwidth, computations, and power consumption. It is expected that systems with unprecedented scales can resolve the problems caused by varieties of big data with daunting volumes. Nevertheless, without big data benchmarks, it is very difficult for big data owners to make choice on which system is best for meeting with their specific requirements. They also face challenges on how to optimize the systems and their solutions for specific or even comprehensive workloads. Meanwhile, researchers are also working on innovative data management systems, hardware architectures, operating systems, and programming systems to improve performance in dealing with big data. For example, using directives, application developers can port their codes to accelerators incrementally while minimizing code changes. Other approaches include Domain Specific Languages, C++ metaprogramming, and runtimes APIs being developed for Exascale which are starting to emerge. Although these approaches aim to introduce abstraction without performance penalty, programming challenges are still manyfold especially with their designs, implementations and application porting experiences on rapidly evolving hardware, some with diverse memory subsystems. The programming approaches will need to adapt to such developments and make improvements to raise their performance portability that will increase the productivity of accelerators as HPC components. Such improvements are continuously being discussed with standards committees for C++, OpenCL, OpenMP, OpenACC, and Exascale co- design centers for DSLs. This workshop is designed to assess the improved features of programming models (including but not limited to directives-based programming models), their implementations, and experiences with their deployment in HPC applications on multiple architectures. This Doctoral Dissertation Colloquium will be part of the 2016 International Conference on High Performance Computing & Simulation (HPCS 2016) in Innsbruck, Austria, July 18-22, 2016. http://hpcs2016.cisedu.info/ or http://cisedu.us/rp/hpcs16. The intent of the DDC is to bring together PhD students who have not defended their thesis before HPCS 2016. The main goal of this session is to foster excellence in HPCS related research by providing students feedback and advice that are particularly relevant to their doctoral studies and career development. Each participant will be paired up with a senior researcher who will act as a mentor, providing constructive remarks and guidance on future plans. This colloquium will give participants the opportunity to present their ongoing research in a friendly forum. The large size and complexity of biological data sets, and inherent complexity of the underlying biological problems have collectively resulted in large run-time and memory requirements. The goal of this workshop is to provide a forum for discussion of latest research in developing high-performance computing solutions to data- and compute-intensive problems arising from all areas of computational life sciences. We are especially interested in parallel and distributed algorithms, memory-efficient algorithms, large scale data mining techniques, including approaches for big data and cloud computing, algorithms on multicores, manycores and GPUs, and design of high-performance software and hardware for biological applications. The workshop will feature contributed papers as well as invited talks from reputed researchers in the field.
