Using directives improve productivity, and program portability with minimal changes to the applications while achieving good power-efficiency and performance. HPC researchers and programmers (including Energy, Climate, Oil & Gas, Computational Chemistry, and Machine Learning) wishing to tap into the performance benefits of commodity accelerators are starting to use directives to program accelerators including OpenACC, OpenMP and other similar programming interfaces vigorously to tap into commodity accelerators and speed up applications. The goal of this workshop is to bring together users, vendors, and tools providers to share their knowledge and experiences to program heterogeneous systems using directive-based programming interfaces such as OpenACC, OpenMP, etc to achieve good performance. This year's workshop will also emphasize in the future direction of accelerator programming using directives and how we can address better the user and tools-ecosystem needs. Although, this is a workshop for accelerator programming using directives, we welcome ideas used for other languages/APIs that may be used to interoperate with directives, used to translate the directives, or target the directives. To keep pace, applications need to harness much higher degrees of parallelism while ensuring efficient use of the underlying computing resources, which can be highly concurrent many-core systems or heterogeneous accelerator architectures (or a combination of both). Additionally, applications must adhere to additional constraints, in particular with respect to power consumption (both peak and average power) and resilience. Writing codes that run correctly and efficiently on such complex systems is extraordinarily challenging. At the same time, applications themselves are becoming more complex as well, which can be seen in emerging scale- bridging applications, the integration of fault-tolerance and uncertainty quantification, or advances in algorithms. Combined, these trends place higher and higher demands on the application development process and thus require adequate tool support for debugging and performance analysis. The PROPER workshop will serve as a forum to present novel work on scalable methods and tools for high-performance computing. The workshop covers parallel program development and analysis, debugging, correctness checking, and performance measurement and evaluation. Further topics include the integration of tools with compilers and the overall development environment, as well as success stories reporting application performance, scalability, reliability, power and energy optimization, or productivity improvements that have been achieved using tools. The workshop is supported by the Virtual Institute - High Productivity Supercomputing (VI-HPS), an initiative to promote the development and integration of HPC programming tools. Call for papers The European Conference on Computer Systems (EuroSys) is a premier international forum for presenting computer systems research, broadly construed. EuroSys 2015 seeks papers on all areas of computer systems research, including, but not limited to: Cloud computing Database systems Dependable systems Distributed systems File and storage systems Language support and runtime systems Mobile and pervasive systems Networked systems Operating systems Parallelism, concurrency, and multicore systems Real-time, embedded, and cyber-physical systems Secure systems, privacy and anonymity preserving systems Tracing, analysis, and transformation of systems Virtualization systems Papers will be judged on novelty, significance, correctness, and clarity. We encourage papers that bridge research in different communities. We also welcome experience papers that clearly articulate lessons learnt and papers that refute prior published results. Papers will be provisionally accepted and final acceptance is subject to shepherding by a member of the program committee. Reviewing will be double-blind, meaning the authors' identities will be hidden from the reviewers. EuroSys applies ACM's policies for plagiarism, submission confidentiality, reviewer anonymity, and prior and concurrent paper submission. The second international FedICI'2014 workshop on Federative and interoperable cloud infrastructures (http://users.iit.uni-miskolc.hu/~kecskemeti/FedICI14/) August 25-29, 2014, Porto, Portugal organized in conjunction with Euro-par 2014 (http://europar2014.dcc.fc.up.pt/) Workshop theme ============== Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) cloud systems allow the dynamic creation, destruction and management of Virtual Machines (VM) on virtualized clusters. IaaS clouds provide a high-level of abstraction to the end user that allows the creation of on-demand services through a pay as you go infrastructure combined with elasticity. As a result, many academic infrastructure service providers have started transitions to add cloud resources to their previously existing campus and shared grid deployments. To complete such solutions, they should also support the unification of multiple cloud and/or cloud and grid solutions in a seamless, preferably interoperable way. Hybrid, community or multi-clouds may utilize more than one cloud system, which are also called as a cloud federations. The management of such federations raise several challenges and open issues that require significant research work to be done in this area. This workshop will provide a dedicated forum for sharing the latest results, exchanging ideas and experiences, presenting new research, development and management of interoperable, federated IaaS cloud systems. The aim of the workshop is to help the community with defining the current state, determining further goals and presenting architectures and service frameworks to achieve highly interoperable federated cloud infrastructures. Priority will be given to submissions that focus on presenting solutions to interoperability and efficient management challenges faced by current and future infrastructure clouds. Selection will prioritize papers that document and present measured comparisons or practical information on realistic, real-world solutions. All submissions will be peer-reviewed and judged on correctness, originality, technical strength, significance, quality of presentation and relevance to the topics of interest. [We apologize if you receive multiple copies of this message.] ======================================================================== CALL FOR PAPERS 7th Workshop on UnConventional High Performance Computing 2014 (UCHPC 2014) August 25/26, 2014, Porto, Portugal held in conjunction with Euro-Par 2014, August 25 - August 29, 2014 Porto, Portugal uchpc14.cs.tum.edu ======================================================================== Extended submission deadline: June 9, 2014 Background ---------- Recent issues with the power consumption of conventional HPC hardware results in both new interest in accelerator hardware and in usage of mass-market hardware originally not designed for HPC. The most prominent examples are GPUs, but FPGAs, DSPs and embedded designs are also possible candidates to provide higher power efficiency, as they are used in energy-restriced environments, such as smartphones or tablets. The so-called "dark silicon" forecast, i.e. not all transistors may be active at the same time, may lead to even more specialized hardware in future mass-market products. Exploiting this hardware for HPC can be a worthwhile challenge. As the word "UnConventional" in the title suggests, the workshop focuses on hardware or platforms used for HPC, which were not intended for HPC in the first place. Reasons could be raw computing power, good performance per watt, or low cost in general. To address this unconventional hardware, often, new programming approaches and paradigms are required to make best use of it. A second focus of the workshop is on innovative, (yet) unconventional new programming models. To this end, UCHPC tries to capture solutions for HPC which are unconventional today but could become conventional and significant tomorrow, and thus provide a glimpse into the eventual future of HPC. Topics ------ The goal of the workshop is to present latest research in how hardware and software (yet) unconventional for HPC is or can be used to reach goals such as best performance per watt. UCHPC also covers according programming models, compiler techniques, and tools. Thus, suggested topics for papers include, but are not limited to the following: * Innovative use of hardware and software unconventional for HPC * HPC applications or visualizations in connection with HPC on GPUs (GPGPU), using GPUs embedded on processor dies (as found in AMD Fusion/APUs, NVidia Denver, Intel Ivy Bridge), Intel's MIC and SCC, low power/embedded processors (including DSPs, Adapteva Epiphany), FPGAs (e.g. Convey), Tilera's tile-based many-core processors, IBM Cell BE, accelerators, visualization cards, etc. * Cluster/Grid solutions using unconventional hardware, e.g. clusters of game consoles, nodes using GPUs, Low Power/Embedded Processors, MPSoCs, new many-cores from Intel and/or ARM designs, Mac Minis/AppleTVs, FPGAs etc. * Heterogeneous computing on hybrid platforms * Work on and use of new programming models and paradigms needed to support unconventional hardware, and hybrid/hierarchical combinations with more conventional systems. The definition of these applications requires to afford several challenges, like the definition of user interfaces, of coordination protocols, and of proper middle-ware and architectures supporting distributed cooperation. Collaborative applications may greatly benefits also from the support of cloud and P2P architectures. As a matter of fact, with the emergence of readily available cloud platforms, collaborative applications developers have the opportunity of deploying their applications in the cloud, or by exploiting a hybrid P2P/Cloud architectures with dynamically adapting cloud support. This brings possibilities to smaller developers that were reserved for the big companies until recently. The integration of mobile/Cloud platforms for Collaborative Applications is another challenge for the widespread of these applications. This track aims to provide a venue for researchers to present and discuss important aspects of P2P/Cloud collaborative applications and of the platforms supporting these applications. 7th Workshop on Resiliency in High Performance Computing (Resilience) in Clusters, Clouds, and Grids in conjunction with the 20th International European Conference on Parallel and Distributed Computing (Euro-Par 2014),Porto, Portugal, August 25-29, 2014 Overview: Clusters, Clouds, and Grids are three different computational paradigms with the intent or potential to support High Performance Computing (HPC). Currently, they consist of hardware, management, and usage models particular to different computational regimes, e.g., high performance cluster systems designed to support tightly coupled scientific simulation codes typically utilize high-speed interconnects and commercial cloud systems designed to support software as a service (SAS) do not. However, in order to support HPC, all must at least utilize large numbers of resources and hence effective HPC in any of these paradigms must address the issue of resiliency at large-scale. Recent trends in high-performance computing (HPC) systems have clearly indicated that future increases in performance, in excess of those resulting from improvements in single-processor performance, will be achieved through corresponding increases in system scale, i.e., using a significantly larger component count. As the raw computational performance of the world's fastest HPC systems increases from today's current multi-petascale to next-generation exascale capability and beyond, their number of computational, networking, and storage components will grow from the ten-to-one-hundred thousand compute nodes of today's systems to several hundreds of thousands of compute nodes in the foreseeable future. This substantial growth in system scale, and the resulting component count, poses a challenge for HPC system and application software with respect to reliability, availability and serviceability (RAS). The expected total component count of these HPC systems calls into questions many of today's HPC RAS assumptions. Although the mean-time to failure (MTTF) for each individual component, e.g., processor, memory module, and network interface, may be above typical consumer product standard, the probability of failure for the overall system scales proportionally to the number of interdependent components and their combined probabilities of failure. Thus, the enormous number of individual components results in a much lower system meantime to failure (SMTTF), causing more frequent system-wide interruptions than displayed by current HPC systems. This effect is not limited to hardware components, but also extends to software components, e.g., operating system, system software, and applications. Although software components do not show less reliability with increasing age like hardware components, they do contain other sources of failures, such as design and implementation errors. Furthermore, the health of software components also involves resource utilization, such as processor, memory and network usage. Authors are invited to submit papers electronically in English in PDF format. Submitted manuscripts should be structured as technical papers and may not exceed 12 pages, including figures, tables and references, using Springer's Lecture Notes in Computer Science (LNCS) format at <http://www.springer.com/computer/lncs?SGWID=0-164-6-793341-0>. Submissions should include abstract, key words and the e-mail address of the corresponding author. Papers not conforming to these guidelines may be returned without review. All manuscripts will be reviewed and will be judged on correctness, originality, technical strength, significance, quality of presentation, and interest and relevance to the conference attendees. Background ========= Since the beginning of the multicore era, parallel processing has become prevalent across the board. However, in order to continue a performance increase according to Moore's Law, a next step needs to be taken: away from common multicores towards innovative many-core architectures. Such systems, equipped with a significant higher amount of cores per chip than multicores, pose challenges in both hardware and software design. On the hardware side, complex on-chip networks, scratchpads and memory interfaces as well as cache-hierarchies, cache-coherence strategies and the building of coherency domains have to be taken into account. However, the ROME workshop focuses on the software side because without complying system software, runtime and operating system support, all these new hardware facilities cannot be exploited. Hence, the new challenges in hardware/software co-design are to step beyond traditional approaches and to wage new programming models and OS designs in order to exploit the theoretically available performance as effectively and power-aware as possible. The focus of the ROME workshop stands in the tradition of a successful series of events originally hosted by the Many-core Applications Research Community (MARC). Prior MARC Symposia took place at ONERA research center in Toulouse, at the Hasso Plattner Institute in Potsdam and at the RWTH Aachen University. Last year, this successful series has been continued by the 1st ROME workshop at the Euro-Par 2013 conference as a thematically related follow-up event for a broader audience. Topics ===== This year, too, authors from all related disciplines are invited to submit unpublished papers regarding software for novel many-core hardware architectures. The call for papers especially emphasizes on the challenges and research questions arising from the upcoming generation of heterogeneous and/or massive parallel systems stepping towards a many-core dominated exascale era. However, under the hood, many parameters at both software and hardware level need to be controlled to ensure the reliability, performance, and energy efficiency of cloud applications. Furthermore, workload variability and software heterogeneity make optimal parameter selection complex, which combined with the large scale of clouds call for distributed resource management solutions. The workshop is aimed to foster multidisciplinary research in Cloud Control, leveraging expertise in areas such as distributed systems, control theory, autonomic computing, systems management, mathematical statistics, energy management, and performance management. By providing an understanding of the research challenges ahead and by enabling multi-disciplinary research collaborations, the ambition is to shape the future of cloud management. The 6th Cloud Control Workshop is held in conjunction with the 7th IEEE/ACM Conference on Utility and Cloud Computing (UCC 2014).
