CALL FOR PAPERS IEEE Micro (Magazine) Special Issue on Artificial Intelligence at the Edge Artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms require powerful and efficient computer architectures for two distinct tasks: training and inference. The first is extremely compute- and memory-intensive, and in some cases can take days or weeks to complete. The latter usually implies real-time performance. As an increasing number of smart devices come online, performing more AI inference at the edge (far away from the cloud), they have the power to enable lower latency, greater privacy, better data governance, and higher availability when compared to cloud/datacenter-based inference. Also, training can be favored by adopting new federated learning computational models that perform part of the training concurrently on each edge node and merge parameters on the cloud/server later. The thorough understanding of the interaction of hardware and software in edge architectures creates a unique opportunity to innovate the ever-increasing energy efficiency, performance, and usability of AI systems at the edge. This special issue of IEEE Micro will explore academic and industrial research on topics that combine AI and edge computing. Contributions should relate to the design, performance, or application of microprocessors and microcomputers. Topics of interest include (but are not limited to): * Digital or analog AI systems at the edge * Low-power neural processing engines * Energy efficiency of AI systems at the edge * DSL and parallel programming models for AI systems at the edge * FPGAs and low-power GPUs for AI at the edge * Customized accelerator architectures and functional unit design * Methods for efficient reconfigurability and adaptability at the edge * High-level synthesis design of customized AI engines at the edge * Emerging memory technologies for edge AI, such as processing-in-memory systems * Computer systems abstractions to federated learning models * Computation and communication tradeoffs in federated learning models * Tools and libraries to support AI systems at the edge, such as IoT, virtual reality/augmented reality (VR/AR) systems, and wearables * AI systems for big-data processing at the edge, such as bioinformatics, genomics, digital agriculture, and weather prediction * Formal methods and techniques for data privacy in medical data, finance data, etc. * Security implications of AI computing at the edge * Sensor preprocessing and platform integration * Techniques and analysis of quantization and network pruning * Real-time performance, accuracy, and system complexity constraint analysis Important Dates: Submission deadline: February 15, 2022 Initial notifications: May 17, 2022 Revised papers due: June 7, 2022 Final notifications: July 12, 2022 Final versions due: July 26, 2022 Publication: September/October 2022. Authors are encouraged to submit original scientific contributions such as state-of-art reviews and new research perspectives, groundbreaking ideas and/or architectures, solutions and/or applications for real problems, empirical and/or evaluation works, case studies, etc., in conformity with the themes of this Conference. Four types of papers can be submitted: Full paper: Finished or consolidated R&D works, to be included in one of the Conference themes. These papers are assigned a 6-page limit. Short paper: Ongoing works with relevant preliminary results, opened to discussion. These papers are assigned a 4-page limit. Poster paper: Initial work with relevant ideas, opened to discussion. These papers are assigned a 2-page limit. Company paper: Companies' papers that show practical experience, R & D, tools, etc., focused in some topics of the conference. These articles are abstracts with a maximum of 2 pages. Papers submitted for the Scientific Committee’s evaluation must not include any information leading to the authors’ identification. Therefore, the authors’ names, affiliations and bibliographic references should not be included in the early version. This information should only be included in the final version. Submitted papers must not have been published and must not be under review for any other conference and national or international publication. Papers must comply with the format standard <https://mkt.saisti.eu/go/c9638c06e2b6a08ff494b41d3073b7034db962330e29287183…> and be written in Portuguese, Spanish or English. All papers will be subjected to a “blind review” by at least two members of the Scientific Committee. Full papers can be accepted as short papers or poster papers only. Similarly, short papers can be accepted as poster papers only. In these two cases, the authors will be allowed to maintain the original number of pages in the proceedings publication. The authors of accepted poster papers must also build and print a poster to be exhibited during the Conference. This poster must follow an A1 or A2 vertical format. The Conference includes Work Sessions where these posters are presented and orally discussed, with a 5-minute limit per poster. The authors of accepted full papers will dispose of a 15-minute presentation in the Conference Work Session, and approximately 5 minutes of discussion will follow each presentation. The authors of accepted short papers and company papers will dispose of an 11-minute presentation in the Conference Work Session, and approximately 4 minutes of discussion will follow each presentation. Themes Submitted papers must follow the main themes proposed for the Conference (the topics proposed in each theme constitute a mere framework reference; they are not intended as restrictive): A) OMIS - Organizational Models and Information Systems B) KMDSS - Knowledge Management and Decision Support Systems C) SSAAT - Software Systems, Architectures, Applications and Tools D) CNMPS - Computer Networks, Mobility and Pervasive Systems E) HCC - Human Centered Computing F) HIS - Health Informatics G) ITE - Information Technologies in Education Publication and Indexing To ensure that the contribution (full paper, short paper, symposium doctoral paper) is published in the Proceedings, at least one of the authors must be fully registered by the 11th of April, and the paper must comply with the suggested layout and page-limit. Additionally, all recommended modifications must be addressed by the authors before they submit the final version. No more than one paper per registration will be published in the Conference Proceedings. An extra fee must be paid for publication of additional papers, with a maximum of one additional paper per registration. The IoT network can generate large amounts of data in a variety of formats and using different protocols which can be stored and processed in the cloud. The conference looks to address the issues surrounding IoT devices, their interconnectedness and services they may offer, including efficient, effective and secure analysis of the data IoT produces using machine learning and other advanced techniques, models and tools, and issues of security, privacy and trust that will emerge as IoT technologies mature and become part of our everyday lives. Big Data (BD) has core values of volume, velocity, variety and veracity. After collecting much data from IoT, BD can be jointly used with machine learning, AI, statistical and other advanced techniques, models and methods, which can create values for people and organizations adopting it, since forecasting, deep analysis and analytics can help identify weaknesses and make improvements based on different analysis. Maintaining a high level of security and privacy for data in IoT are crucial and we welcome recommendations, solutions, demonstrations and best practices for all forms of security and privacy for IoT and BD. Artificial intelligence and Big Data Analytics have been established in bioinformatics and biomedical research and are increasingly reaching healthcare with certified clinical decision support systems and smart health apps. Besides stablished fields like molecular dynamics, genomics or neuroimaging now many other medical domains rely heavily on large scale computational resources. The emerging new methods need to manage Tbytes or Pbytes of data with large- scale structural and functional relationships, TFlops or PFlops of computing power for simulating highly complex models, or many-task processes and work- flows for processing and analyzing data. On the other hand, they need to provide interaction with highly distributed user landscapes, such as actors of primary care, hospitals and increasingly the patient itself. Today, many areas in Life Sciences are facing these challenges, such as biomodelling, predictive models of disease and treatment, evolutionary biology, medical biology, cell biology, biomedical image processing, biosignal sensoring or computer-supported diagnosis. This new situation demands appropriate IT-infrastructures, where biological and medical data can be processed within an acceptable timespan - reaching from minutes in health-care applications to days in large-scale research projects. Distributed IT-systems such as Grids, Clouds, Fogs and Big Data Environments are promising to address research, clinical and medical research community requirements. They allow for significant reduction of computational time for running large experiments and for speeding-up development time for new algorithms. Furthermore, they can increase the availability of new methods for the research community and reduce barriers for large-scale multi-centric collaborations. However, specific challenges in the employment of such systems for biomedical applications - such as security, reliability and user-friendliness - often impede straightforward adoption of existing solutions from other application domains. This workshop aims at bringing together developers of bioinformatics and medical applications and researchers in the field of distributed IT systems. It addresses researchers who are already employing distributed infrastructure techniques in biomedical applications as well as computer scientists working in the field of distributed systems interested in bringing new developments into the biomedical area. The goals of the workshop are to exchange and discuss existing solutions and latest developments in both fields, and to identify the remaining challenges. The workshop further intends to identify common requirements to lead future developments in collaboration between Life Sciences and Computing Sciences. Given the growth in such application scenarios and the recent advances in computing hardware, algorithms and techniques, machine learning and inference at the edge are unfolding and growing at a rapid pace. The resulting diversity in edge- computing hardware and software framework in terms of capabilities, architectures, and programming models poses several new challenges. The ACM International Conference on Supercomputing (ICS) is the premier international forum for the presentation of research results in high-performance computing systems. The 36th conference (ICS-2022) will be held as a virtual global event in June 2022. Papers are solicited on all aspects of the architecture, software, and applications of high-performance computing systems of all scales (from chips to supercomputing systems), including but not limited to: • Processor, memory, storage, accelerator and interconnect architectures , including architectures based on future and emerging hardware (e.g. quantum, photonic, neuromorphic). • Programming languages, paradigms and execution models, including domain-specific languages and scientific problem-solving software environments. • Compilers, runtime systems and system software, including optimization and support for hardware resource management, energy management, fault tolerance, correctness, reproducibility, and security. • High-performance algorithms and applications including machine learning and large-scale data analytics, as well as the implementation and deployment of algorithms and applications on large-scale systems. • Tools for measurement, modeling, analysis and visualization of performance, energy, or other quantitative properties of high performance computing systems, including data and code visualization tools.
