Call for Participation: ACM SIGPLAN/SIGBED International Conference on Languages, Compilers, Tools and Theory of Embedded Systems (LCTES 2023) Co-located with PLDI and FCRC 2023 Orlando, Florida June 18, 2023 https://pldi23.sigplan.org/home/LCTES-2023 LCTES provides a link between the programming languages and embedded systems engineering communities. Researchers and developers in these areas are addressing many similar problems but with different backgrounds and approaches. LCTES is intended to expose researchers and developers from either area to relevant work and interesting problems in the other area and provide a forum where they can interact. This year's program features a keynote by David Whalley (Florida State University), and presentations of eleven excellent full papers and three work-in progress papers covering a wide range of interesting topics. Specifically, this is 23:59 IDLW, i.e., UTC–12:00. ****************** ****************** Overview The ongoing revolution enabled via containerization, virtualization, and new orchestration models has dramatically changed how applications and services are delivered and managed across the computing industry. This revolution has established a new ecosystem of tools and techniques with new, flexible and agile approaches, and continues to gain traction in the HPC community. In addition to HPC-optimized container runtimes, emerging technologies like Kubernetes create a new set of opportunities and challenges. While adoption is growing, questions regarding best practices, foundational concepts, tools, and standards remain. Our goal is to promote the adoption of these tools and introspect the impact of this new ecosystem on HPC use cases. This workshop serves as a key venue for presenting late-breaking research, sharing experiences and best practices, and fostering collaboration in this field. Our fifth workshop iteration will continue to emphasize real-world experiences and challenges in adopting and optimizing these new approaches for HPC. ****************** ****************** Scope The scope of this workshop is to better understand and improve paradigms around containerization, virtualization and orchestration for HPC use cases. The most well-known approaches are containers and virtualization, but anything to further these goals is welcome. Topics include but are not limited to: * Container runtimes, virtual machine implementations, and other related technologies * Perspectives from container framework developers and maintainers * System and architecture portability * Scientific reproducibility, including FAIR considerations * Experience reports from users, developers, and system administrators * Lessons from exascale * HPC in the cloud and/or cloud in the HPC * GPUs, accelerators, proprietary interconnects, and other hardware considerations * Security considerations when adopting container technologies, including zero trust models * Container and virtual machine image management, including distribution and archiving * Workflows, including interaction between traditional HPC applications and containerized workflows or edge services * Performance and scaling studies with containers and/or VMs * Orchestration, scheduling, and/or resource management of jobs and microservices * New interaction techniques such as web apps (Jupyter, Rstudio, etc.) * Community standards, including OCI * Role of containerization in DevOps (ex: Gitlab CI/CD) * Efforts to provide and curate containers * Improving container user experience * Future of containers (ex: web assembly, portability) * Perspectives on container outreach- convincing native application users/devs to make the jump ****************** ****************** Workshop format Although in the past several years CANOPIE-HPC has followed a more traditional format, based on SC22 attendee feedback we plan to adjust the format for SC23 to include additional lightning talks, panels, and open discussion. The content of technical sessions will be driven by the mix of accepted submissions curated by the program chairs. We will offer two submission tracks: one for full paper submissions, and one for lightning talks. Full paper submissions will receive at least 3 peer reviews in the SC23 submission system on the basis of scientific validity, impact to the field, reproducibility, and opportunity for interactive discussion at the workshop. The program committee will discuss the submissions and their reviews over a conference call moderated by the program chairs; final proceedings will be selected by majority vote of the committee. As in all previous years, accepted submissions will be published by the IEEE Computer Society for inclusion in the IEEE Digital Library. Artifacts for reproducibility (digital archives of code, README instructions, images, etc.) will be a significant factor in paper acceptance into the workshop. Further details are available in the “Submission procedure” section below. For lightning talks, participants can submit an abstract that will be reviewed by the program committee. Our lightning talk track is meant to showcase demos, exploratory and late-breaking work, pain-points or shortcomings in current container/virtualization technologies, and projects that may not be fleshed-out enough to warrant a paper submission. We especially encourage lightning talk submissions from early career participants and people who are relatively new to the world of containers/virtualization. ****************** ****************** Diversity and inclusivity Similarly to the broader field of HPC, the organizers recognize concerns with diversity and inclusion in CANOPIE-HPC. We want to continue to improve diversity and inclusion at leadership, program committee, and participation levels. The expanded lightning talks session is intended to lower the barrier to entry in the workshop and involve more early-career and non-expert participants. We also plan to include an open discussion section to invite additional audience questions and participation. Virtual attendance (another opportunity for inclusion) will be guaranteed. We’ll make sure we have someone from the program community monitoring the chat throughout the workshop to address any issues or questions from our virtual attendees. ****************** ****************** Submission procedure Accepted manuscripts will be published in IEEE Computer Society. Manuscripts should use the IEEE Transactions format; templates are available for Microsoft Word and LaTeX (though note that the IEEEtran class comes with most LaTeX installations). Manuscripts must be at least 6 pages in the IEEE Transactions format, including figures, tables, and references. There is no maximum, but writing should be concise, and manuscript length must be commensurate with contribution size. We enthusiastically welcome original, high-quality submissions within the scope above. These may describe complete studies; work-in-progress research; position papers on controversial, emerging, or hot topics; state of the practice; or any other manuscript the authors believe should be included in the CANOPIE-HPC program. We encourage submissions from academia, industry, government, and/or any other type of institution. Each manuscript will be assessed using peer review by program committee members (or outside reviewers, if needed) on the basis of scientific validity, impact to the field, reproducibility, inclusivity, and opportunity for useful and lively discussion at the workshop. Review will be single-masked; i.e., reviewers will know authors’ identities, but not vice versa. Authors should not anonymize their manuscripts. Each manuscript submission will be checked using anti-plagiarism software and can expect to have at least 3 reviews. In conjunction with the SC Reproducibility Initiative, submissions should be as transparent as possible regarding all methods. Submissions are also expected to provide reproducibility artifacts such as reproduction instructions, source code, build recipes, and/or container images. Technologies that are applicable to a wide range of use-cases and accessible to a broad user base are of particular interest. Showing technologies applied to specific use-cases can be very helpful for the audience’s understanding, but be sure to show and discuss how they generalize. Submissions can be made in either the Demo or Work-in-progress tracks. Both tracks will feature work that is innovative and of significant interest to the community: * Demos: The Demo track is for more mature work and should be based on examples/code that is accessible to anyone in the audience. These submissions include a 4-page paper, demo recording, and presentation. * Work-in-progress: The Work-in-progress track is for work that may not be ready for community adoption but demonstrates the direction and would benefit from community feedback. These submissions include an abstract and demo recording. *** About the HPPSS Workshop *** Python is the lingua franca of scientific discovery workflows. As the second most popular language with an estimated 15 million world-wide developers in 2022, Python bridges the worlds of artificial intelligence, data science, high-performance computing applications and web-application development. In addition, modern and emerging science workflows make use of shell scripts, databases, HPC simulation codes, AI frameworks, and data manipulation scripts, stitched together and often highly customized to the configuration of a particular system. Python, with the support of its massive user community, includes the standard interfaces necessary to unify these disparate things into a common interface for scientists. A single programmable interface for edge-to-HPC that makes it possible to compose high-performance and scalable workflows of distributed applications across languages would be a foundation for the post Exascale era. This model decouples individual hardware resources, including tightly coupled ones such as processors and memory, and enables the composition of logical compute platforms with flexible and dynamic hardware configurations. The concept of disaggregation is driven by various recent trends in computation. From an application perspective, the increasing importance of data analytics and machine learning workloads in HPC centers brings unprecedented need for memory capacity, which is in stark contrast with the growing imbalance in the peak compute-to-memory capacity ratio of traditional system board based server platforms where memory modules are co-located with processors. Meanwhile, traditional simulation workloads leave memory underutilized. At the hardware front, the proliferation of heterogeneous, special purpose computing elements promotes the need for configurable compute platforms, while at the same time, the increasing maturity of optical interconnects raises the prospects of better distance independence in networking infrastructure. The workshop intends to explore various aspects of resource disgregation, composability and their implications for high performance computing, both in dedicated HPC centers as well as in cloud environments. Currently, they are typically implemented with Large Language Models; a subset of Foundation Models. In the case of text generation, massive data and computation are devoted to training it for vocabulary, grammar, then behavior and even personality. As a result, its responses to your prompts are or can seem highly human-like and creative. This feature has made it and will make it a valuable tool in many ways. However, with this power come disruptions that are rippling across institutions, enterprises, and society. In light of them, we will discuss deployment, scalability, sustainability, and governance of Generative AI. Bio: Dr. Eng Lim Goh is HPE Senior Vice President for value from data and AI for customers. As principal investigator of the experiment aboard the International Space Station to operate autonomous supercomputers on long duration space travel, he was awarded NASA’s Exceptional Technology Achievement Medal. His other work includes co-inventing blockchain-based swarm learning applications for finance and healthcare, which was featured on the cover of Nature; overseeing deployment of AI to Formula 1 racing; industrial application of technologies behind a champion poker bot; co-designing the systems architecture for simulating a biologically detailed mammalian brain; predicting predisposition to vaccine side effects by machine learning of gene expression data; and co-inventing a data-intensive fabric for Exascale systems. Extracting value from data is one common factor of all the above. He has eleven U.S. patents, of which 4 are ESG related; plus 2 others pending. This is made possible by overcoming the fragmentation of IoT-edge-cloud resources and their segregation in tiers, enabling applications to be seamlessly executed and relocated along a continuum of resources spanning from the edge to the cloud. By distributing resources all around, the emerging Compute Continuum paradigm supports the execution of data-intensive applications as close as possible to data sources and end users. Besides consolidated vertical and horizontal scaling patterns, this paradigm also offers more detailed adaptation actions that strictly depend on the specific infrastructure components (e.g., to reduce energy consumption, or to exploit specific hardware such as GPUs and FPGAs). This enables the enhancement of latency-sensitive applications, the reduction of network bandwidth consumption, the improvement of privacy protection, and the development of novel services aimed at improving living, health, safety, and mobility. All of this should be achievable by application developers without having to worry about how and where the developed application components will be executed. Therefore, to unleash the true potential offered by the Compute Continuum, autonomous, proactive, and infrastructure-aware management is desirable, if not mandatory, calling for novel interdisciplinary approaches that exploit optimization theory, control theory, machine learning, and artificial intelligence methods. This special issue aims to investigate and gather research contributions on the emerging Compute Continuum, seeking solutions for running distributed applications while efficiently managing heterogeneous and widespread computing resources. Dear Colleagues, IEEE Cluster is a highly successful conference series ongoing for over 20 years. We are excited to announce two (2) open general member positions within the steering committee. We invite the community to submit nominations for the positions, which will start following IEEE Cluster 2023. Nominations are due July 1st, 2023. Decisions will be sent out by Sept 1, 2023. More information: http://clustercomp.org/ A few notes on the nomination process: * Nominations can be for yourself (self-nominations) or for another person. * All nominations should contain the following information: - The name and contact information (email) of the nominee. - A short (500-word) description of why the nominee is an excellent addition to the IEEE Cluster steering committee. Please include information on the nominee’s previous contributions to IEEE and ACM conferences. In particular, his/her/their contributions to past IEEE Cluster conferences are highly regarded by the steering committee. Previous participation may include attendance, publications, or volunteer positions (e.g., PC member, chair position).
