9th IEEE/ACM International Conference on Utility and Cloud Computing (UCC 2016) December 6-9, 2016 - Tongji University – Shanghai, China Call for Posters The International Conference on Utility and Cloud Computing (UCC) is the premier IEEE/ACM conference covering all areas related to cloud computing as a utility and provides an international forum for leading researchers and practitioners in this important and growing field. UCC 2016, to be held in Shanghai (China), is the 9th event in a successful conference series. UCC 2016 will happen as cloud computing consolidates worldwide as the 21st century utility, and is therefore of high relevance for both academic research and industrial innovation. Authors are invited to submit original unpublished research posters and demos to the UCC 2016 conference. The authors will also present their posters and discuss their research with the conference attendees and visitors in the poster exhibition session. The recommended poster size is A0 (33.1 x 46.8 in, portrait). Workflows provide a systematic way of describing the analysis, and rely on workflow management systems to execute the complex analyses on a variety of distributed resources. They are at the interface of end-users and computing infrastructures. With the drastic increase of raw data volume in every domain, they play an even more critical role to assist scientists in organizing and processing their data and to leverage HPC or HTC resources. This workshop focuses on the many facets of data-intensive workflow management systems, ranging from job execution to service management and the coordination of data, service, and job dependencies. December 12th, 2016 --------------------------------------------------------------------- SCOPE: Cloud computing offers a computational model where network, storage, and compute domains can be abstracted into virtual resources offered on demand. While these abstractions offer opportunities to significantly simplify the management and optimize the use of resources, they impose additional challenges on assuring the quality of service (QoS). In the context of multi-tenancy, the same physical resources are shared by different users that do not necessarily share the same service level agreements; hence the QoS distinction has to be enforced at a finer grain. Moreover, certain attributes of the QoS may contradict with others, for instance, high availability favors replication and distributed redundancy while energy efficiency favors de-duplication and consolidation. The multi-layered architecture of the distributed cloud requires not only a thorough orchestration between layers to ensure the required QoS, but also makes the root cause analysis even more complicated in case of the SLA violation. Continuous changes and migrations of the resources allocated at all layers of abstraction pose further challenges to detecting problems, identifying their location and reasoning about causality. The aim of this workshop is to raise awareness of the challenges of the QoS assurance in the cloud, and bring together practitioners and researchers to discuss potential solutions. Special Issue of Theory and Practice of Logic Programming Past and Present (and Future) of Parallel and Distributed Computation in (Constraint) Logic Programming http://www.cs.nmsu.edu/~ffiorett/cfp/TPLP2017/ Since its inception, logic programming has been recognized as an ideal paradigm for addressing the needs of parallel computing. An extensive literature has been developed exploring issues like automated parallelization of logic programs, the use of logic programs to describe parallel and distributed computations, and logic programming models to capture concurrency and facilitate the development of provably correct concurrent applications. After over 30 years of research in these domains, the state of the art has reached a stage where technologies are highly complex and sophisticated, and applications are plentiful. Yet, the continuous development of novel architectures (e.g., the onset of GPU-based computing; the widespread use of simple inter-connected devices, like Arduino and Raspberry Pi; the development of affordable multi-core platforms and reconfigurable computing; the widespread use of cloud computing), the appearance of new domains and potential applications (e.g., big data), and the developments in novel logic programming languages and paradigms are creating new research opportunities and fueling new ideas and developments. The goal of this special issue is to provide a multi-fold perspective of research at the junction between parallel and distributed computation and (constraint) logic programming: 1. Provide well-thought assessments of the state of the art (e.g., in the form of well organized surveys, personal perspectives) 2. Describe cutting-edge coverage of new developments (e.g., novel execution models, innovative systems and implementations) 3. NetSys conference proceedings will be published in IEEE Xplore®. NetSys is a biennial event that originates from the key scientific conference on networked systems in German-speaking countries KiVS (Kommunikation in Verteilten Systemen) – which was initiated 37 years ago and has international orientation since 2013. NetSys is organized by the special interest group "Communication and Distributed Systems" (KUVS), which is anchored both in the German Computer Science society (Gesellschaft für Informatik (GI)) and in the Information Technology society (Informationstechnische Gesellschaft im VDE (ITG)), in cooperation with ACM SIGCOMM and technically co-sponsored by IEEE Communications Society. We are particularly interested in research which reports the ability to measure and make trade-offs in software/hardware co-design to improve sustained application performance. We are also keen to capture the assessment of future systems, for example through work that ensures continued application scalability through peta- and exa-scale systems. The aim of this workshop is to bring together researchers, from industry and academia, concerned with the qualitative and quantitative evaluation and modeling of high-performance computing systems. Authors are invited to submit novel research in all areas of performance modeling, benchmarking and simulation, and we welcome research that brings together current theory and practice. Even casual users of computers now depend upon parallel processing. Thus it is important for every computer user (*and especially every programmer*) to understand how parallelism and distributed computing affect problem solving. It is essential for educators to impart a range of PDC and HPC knowledge and skills at multiple levels within the educational fabric woven by Computer Science (CS), Computer Engineering (CE), and related computational curricula. Companies and laboratories need people with these skills, and, as a result, they are finding that they must now engage in extensive on-the-job training. Nevertheless, rapid changes in hardware platforms, languages, and programming environments increasingly challenge educators to decide what to teach and how to teach it, in order to prepare students for careers that are increasingly likely to involve PDC and HPC. This workshop invites unpublished manuscripts from academia, industry, and government laboratories on topics pertaining to the needs and approaches for augmenting undergraduate and graduate education in Computer Science and Engineering, Computational Science, and computational courses for both STEM and business disciplines with PDC and HPC concepts. The workshop is particularly dedicated to bringing together stakeholders from industry (both hardware vendors and employers), government labs, funding agencies, and academia in the context of SC-16, so that each can hear the challenges faced by others, can learn the various approaches to addressing these challenges, and can have opportunities to exchange ideas and solutions. In addition to contributed talks, this workshop will feature invited talks on opportunities for collaboration, resource sharing, educator training, internships, and other means of increasing cross-fertilization between industry, government, and academia. Proposals for panels and special sessions are also welcome. *KEYNOTE:* The keynote address will be delivered by Dr. Janice E. Cuny of the U.S. National Science Foundation. *BEST PAPER AWARD:* NVIDIA Corporation has donated a Tesla K40 to be presented to the author(s) of the Best Paper, as selected by the Program Committee. Plans include securing arrangements with a journal for a special issue on PDC/HPC Education to which authors of selected papers will be invited to submit extended versions of their workshop papers. This effort is in coordination with the NSF/TCPP curriculum initiative on Parallel and Distributed Computing <http://www.cs.gsu.edu/~tcpp/curriculum/?q=home> and the Center for Parallel and Distributed Computing Curriculum Development and Educational Resources (CDER). Topics of interest include, but are not limited to: 1. Pedagogical issues in incorporating PDC and HPC in undergraduate and graduate education, especially in core courses. 2. Novel ways of teaching PDC and HPC topics. 3. Experience with incorporating PDC and HPC topics into core CS/CE courses. 4. Pedagogical tools, programming environments, infrastructures, languages, and projects for PDC and HPC. 5. Employers’ experiences with and expectation of the level of PDC and HPC proficiency among new graduates. 6. Educational resources based on higher level programming languages such as PGAS, X10, Chapel, Haskell, Python and Cilk, and emerging environments such as CUDA, OpenCL, OpenACC, and Hadoop. 7. New architectures and applications have rapidly become the central focus of the discipline. These changes are often a result of cross-fertilization of parallel and distributed technologies with other rapidly evolving technologies.
