TOPICS ------ SIMUTools' general topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following: * Simulation methods: discrete event, parallel and distributed simulation, time synchronization, load balancing and migration, model partitioning, hybrid simulation, simulation-interoperation, multi-resolution and multi-scale simulation * Simulation techniques: service-oriented, agent-based, web-based, component-based, symbiotic simulation * Simulation software: environments, tools, libraries, and frameworks * Simulation performance: GPU-based simulation, simulation in the cloud, scalability, performance analysis * Modeling formalisms: DEVS, Petri Nets, process algebras, state charts, and others * Simulation verification, validation, accreditation, and analysis: benchmark models, simulation-based verification, workflows, simulation experiment design, and optimization * Simulation packages: widely used frameworks such as Modelica, ns-2/3, OPNET, Qualnet, OMNET++, and other open source software for modeling and simulation The conference invites submissions on the topics above in all application areas of simulation. Authors are invited to submit original, high-quality papers presenting new research related to simulation software, methodologies, applications, and practices. While SIMUTools' main focus is on advances in simulation software and techniques, the submission of papers is encouraged on all aspects of simulation, modeling, and analysis, including broader theoretical and practical research contributions. Papers must be written in English and must not exceed 10 pages. Authors should submit papers via the SIMUTools conference website in PDF format, complying with the ACM conference proceedings style. Submitted papers must not have been submitted for review or published (partially or completely) elsewhere. Every paper will be peer-reviewed by at least three reviewers. Papers will be assessed based on originality, correctness, relevance, and quality of writing. In exceptional circumstances (such as papers evidently out of scope) may not receive full-length reviews and may be rejected summarily. At least one author of each accepted paper is required to register and present the work in person at the conference. Short papers of 4 to 6 pages describing work in progress can also be submitted in the short paper category. WoNDP: 1st Workshop on Near-Data Processing in conjunction with MICRO-46 Sunday, December 8th, 2013 Davis, California, USA Scope: ------ Computing in large-scale systems is shifting away from the traditional compute-centric model successfully used for many decades into one that is much more data-centric. This transition is driven by the evolving nature of what computing comprises, no longer dominated by the execution of arithmetic and logic calculations but instead becoming dominated by large data volume and the cost of moving data to the locations where computations are performed. Data movement impacts performance, power efficiency and reliability, three fundamental components of a system. These trends are leading to changes in the computing paradigm, in particular the notion of moving computation to the data in a so-called Near-Data Processing approach, which seeks to perform computations in the most appropriate location depending on where data resides and what needs to be extracted from that data. Examples already exist in systems that perform some computations closer to disk storage, leveraging the data streaming coming from the disks, filtering the data so that only useful items are transferred for processing in other parts of the system. This workshop is intended to bring together experts from academia and industry to share advances in the development of Near-Data Processing systems principles, with emphasis on large-scale systems. The workshop will consist of submitted papers and invited talks. Topics of interest include but are not limited to: - Analysis of applications illustrating the potential for Near-Data Processing - System and software architectures for Near-Data Processing - Programming models for distributed and heterogeneous infrastructures, driven by location of the data - Processing/Memory/Storage architectures and microarchitectures for Near-Data Processing - Performance evaluation of Near-Data Processing systems and subsystems - Power-efficiency and reliability analysis and evaluation of Near-Data Processing Call for Papers: ---------------- Two kinds of papers are invited: - Technical papers (4-6 pages) with preliminary results. - Position papers (3 pages max) on directions for research and development. ParLearning 2014 Call-for-Paper The 3rd International Workshop on Parallel and Distributed Computing for Large Scale Machine Learning and Big Data Analytics May 23, 2014 Phoenix, AZ, USA In Conjunction with IPDPS 2014 URL: https://edas.info/web/parlearning2014/ ------------------------------------------- Data-driven computing needs no introduction today. The case for using data for strategic advantages is exemplified by web search engines, online translation tools and many more examples. The past decade has seen 1) the emergence of multicore architectures and accelerators as GPGPUs, 2) widespread adoption of distributed computing via the map-reduce/hadoop eco-system and 3) democratization of the infrastructure for processing massive datasets ranging into petabytes by cloud computing. The complexity of the technological stack has grown to an extent where it is imperative to provide frameworks to abstract away the system architecture and orchestration of components for massive-scale processing. However, the growth in volume and heterogeneity in data seems to outpace the growth in computing power. A “collect everything” culture stimulated by cheap storage and ubiquitous sensing capabilities contribute to increasing the noise-to-signal ratio in all collected data. Thus, as soon as the data hits the processing infrastructure, determining the value of information, finding its rightful place in a knowledge representation and determining subsequent actions are of paramount importance. To use this data deluge to our advantage, a convergence between the field of Parallel and Distributed Computing and the interdisciplinary science of Artificial Intelligence seems critical. From application domains of national importance as cyber-security, health-care or smart-grid to providing real-time situational awareness via natural interface based smartphones, the fundamental AI tasks of Learning and Inference need to be enabled for large-scale computing across this broad spectrum of application domains. Many of the prominent algorithms for learning and inference are notorious for their complexity. Adopting parallel and distributed computing appears as an obvious path forward, but the mileage varies depending on how amenable the algorithms are to parallel processing and secondly, the availability of rapid prototyping capabilities with low cost of entry. The first issue represents a wider gap as we continue to think in a sequential paradigm. The second issue is increasingly recognized at the level of programming models, and building robust libraries for various machine-learning and inferencing tasks will be a natural progression. As an example, scalable versions of many prominent graph algorithms written for distributed shared memory architectures or clusters look distinctly different from the textbook versions that generations of programmers have grown with. This reformulation is difficult to accomplish for an interdisciplinary field like Artificial Intelligence for the sheer breadth of the knowledge spectrum involved. The primary motivation of the proposed workshop is to invite leading minds from AI and Parallel & Distributed Computing communities for identifying research areas that require most convergence and assess their impact on the broader technical landscape. Submitted manuscripts should be structured as technical papers and may not exceed 10 letter-size (8.5 x 11) pages including figures, tables and references using the IEEE format for conference proceedings. Submissions not conforming to these guidelines may be returned without review. The official language of the conference is English. All manuscripts will be reviewed and judged on correctness, originality, technical strength, significance, quality of presentation, and interest and relevance to the conference attendees. Paper submissions are limited to 10 pages in 2-column IEEE format including all figures and references. Submitted manuscripts exceeding this limit will be returned without review. For the final camera-ready version, authors with accepted papers may purchase additional pages at the following rates: 100 USD for each of the first two additional pages; 200 USD for each of the third and fourth additional pages. Submitted papers must represent original unpublished research that is not currently under review for any other conference or journal.
