Call for Nominations: 2015 TCPP Outstanding Service and Contributions Award This award recognizes an individual (or a group of individuals) in the broader community who have made major professional service contributions to the parallel, distributed and high-performance computing community. Contributions can be (but not limited to): significant volunteer role in professional meetings (TCPP sponsored as well as others), serving on editorial boards, organizing major events, developing community resources, and international outreach. Note that these are meant to be just some examples and not exhaustive. Also, contributions are not limited to 2014 calendar year. Nomination: A candidate may be nominated by members of the community. An individual may nominate at most one candidate for this award. The nomination should include: 1. Name/email of person making the nomination (self-nominations are not eligible) 2. Name/email of candidate for whom the award is recommended 3. A statement by the nominator (maximum of 500 words) as to why the nominee is highly deserving of the award and a brief summary of the service contributions. 4. CV of the nominee 5. Existing systems for storing, managing, and analyzing data are being pushed to their limits by these applications, and new techniques are necessary to enable efficient data processing for future simulations and experiments. The needs of scientific applications have triggered a continuous increase in scale of parallel systems, as demonstrated by the evolution of Top 500. However, the computation scale has not been matched by an increase in I/O scale. For example, in the design of earlier supercomputers the parallel I/O bandwidth was 1GBps for every TFLOP, whereas in the current solutions is 1GBps for every 10TFLOPS. This increased bottleneck makes even more pressing the need to employ the I/O subsystem in the most efficient solution possible. Scalable I/O has been already identified as critical for the PFLOP systems. The future exascale systems forecasted for 2018-2020 will presumably have O(1B) cores and will be hierarchical in both platform and algorithms. This hierarchy will imply a larger path in pipelining the data from cores to storage and vice-versa, exposing even more the I/O latency perceived by the current MPP architectures. This workshop will provide a forum for engineers and scientists to present and discuss their most recent work related to the storage, management, and analysis of data for scientific workloads. Emphasis will be placed on forward-looking approaches to tackle the challenges of storage at extreme scale or to provide better abstractions for use in scientific workloads. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to: • parallel file systems • scientific databases • active storage • scientific I/O middlewares • extreme scale storage • analysis of large data sets • NoSQL storage solutions and techniques • energy-aware file systems All papers will be reviewed by at least 3 independent reviewers from the international program committee. Papers will be selected based on their originality, their interest for the research community, the quality of the use-case description, the description of the technical solution, the impact of the application and/or technical description and the status of the work. All papers presented at the main conference and workshops will be submitted to IEEE Xplore for publication and EI indexing. Several novel applications have emerged in this area, such as Large Scale Distributed Virtual Environments (LSDVEs). These include distributed social networks, distributed social games, collaborative recommender systems, collaborative learning systems, large scale crowd based applications, supported collaborative work (CSCW). The realization of these applications requires to afford several challenges, like the definition of user interfaces, coordination protocols, and proper middle-ware and architectures supporting distributed cooperation. Collaborative applications may greatly benefit from the support of different kinds of platforms, both cloud and peer to peer and also platforms recently proposed for Internet of things (IoT), like fog computing. Integration of different platforms, for instance mobile and cloud environments is currently a challange. This workshop aims to provide a venue for researchers to present and discuss important aspects of large scale collaborative applications and of the platforms supporting them. The track's aim is to investigate open challenges for such applications, related to both the applications design and to the definition of proper architectures. Some important challenges are, for instance, collaborative protocols design, latency reduction/hiding techniques for guaranteeing real time constraints, large-scale processing of user information, privacy and security issues, state consistency/persistence. The workshop will both present assessment of current state and introduce further directions. The annual meeting has a long, rich tradition, and has been held in European countries. Following a 21st edition that took place in Japan, the 22nd meeting edition shall be back on European soil, in Bordeaux, France. EuroMPI 2015 will continue to focus on not just MPI, but also extensions or alternative interfaces for high-performance homogeneous/heterogeneous /hybrid systems, benchmarks, tools, parallel I/O, fault tolerance, and parallel applications using MPI and other interfaces. Through the presentation of contributed papers, poster presentations and invited talks, attendees will have the opportunity to share ideas and experiences to contribute to the improvement and furthering of message-passing and related parallel programming paradigms. In addition to the main conference's technical program, one-day or half-day workshops will be held. The Call for Workshops is announced separately and also shown in the conference page. The Virtual Institute - High Productivity Supercomputing (VI-HPS) is an initiative to promote the development, integration and use of HPC tools: see http://www.vi-hps.org Participants are invited to bring their own application codes to the workshop to analyze and tune their performance with the help of experts. Apologies if you receive multiple copies of this message] 7th Workshop on Interfaces and Architectures for Scientific Data Storage (IASDS 2015) September 1-4, 2015, held in conjunction with ICPP 2015 in Beijing, China More info at: press3.mcs.anl.gov/iasds15/ High-performance computing simulations and large scientific experiments generate tens of terabytes of data, and these data sizes grow each year. Existing systems for storing, managing, and analyzing data are being pushed to their limits by these applications, and new techniques are necessary to enable efficient data processing for future simulations and experiments. The needs of scientific applications have triggered a continuous increase in scale of parallel systems, as demonstrated by the evolution of Top 500. However, the computation scale has not been matched by an increase in I/O scale. For example, in the design of earlier supercomputers the parallel I/O bandwidth was 1GBps for every TFLOP, whereas in the current solutions is 1GBps for every 10TFLOPS. This increased bottleneck makes even more pressing the need to employ the I/O subsystem in the most efficient solution possible. Scalable I/O has been already identified as critical for the PFLOP systems. The future exascale systems forecasted for 2018-2020 will presumably have O(1B) cores and will be hierarchical in both platform and algorithms. This hierarchy will imply a larger path in pipelining the data from cores to storage and vice-versa, exposing even more the I/O latency perceived by the current MPP architectures. This workshop will provide a forum for engineers and scientists to present and discuss their most recent work related to the storage, management, and analysis of data for scientific workloads. Emphasis will be placed on forward-looking approaches to tackle the challenges of storage at extreme scale or to provide better abstractions for use in scientific workloads. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to: • parallel file systems • scientific databases • active storage • scientific I/O middlewares • extreme scale storage • analysis of large data sets • NoSQL storage solutions and techniques • energy-aware file systems All papers will be reviewed by at least 3 independent reviewers from the international program committee. Papers will be selected based on their originality, their interest for the research community, the quality of the use-case description, the description of the technical solution, the impact of the application and/or technical description and the status of the work. All papers presented at the main conference and workshops will be submitted to IEEE Xplore for publication and EI indexing. Acceptable submissions include short papers and work-in-progress reports, as well as full papers.
