Description of the workshop ---------------------------- The current static usage model of HPC systems is becoming increasingly inefficient. This is driven by the continuously growing complexity and heterogeneity of system architectures, in combination with the increased usage of coupled applications, the need for strong scaling with extreme scale parallelism, and the increasing reliance on complex and dynamic workflows. As a consequence, we see a rise in research on malleable systems, middleware software and applications, which can adjust resource usage dynamically in order to extract a maximum of efficiency. By providing an intelligent global coordination of resources usage, through runtime scheduling of computation, network usage and I/O across all components of the system architecture, malleable HPC systems can maximize the exploitation of their resources, while at the same time minimizing the makespan of applications in many, if not most, cases. Of particular concern is the emerging class of data-intensive applications and their interaction with classic simulation workloads, driven by the growing need to process extremely large data sets. However, uncoordinated file access in combination with limited bandwidth make the I/O system a serious bottleneck. Emerging multi-tier storage hierarchies come with the potential to remove this barrier, but maximizing performance still requires careful control to avoid congestion. Malleability allows systems to dynamically adjust the computation and storage needs of applications, on the one side, and the global system on the other. Such malleable systems, however, face a series of fundamental research challenges, including: who initiates changes in resource availability or usage? How is it communicated? How to compute the optimal usage? How can applications cope with dynamically changing resources? What should malleable programming models and abstractions look like? How to design resource management frameworks for malleable systems? Which resources benefit from malleability and which (if any) should still be managed statically? In order to address these challenges, the HPCMALL workshop will bring together researchers from diverse areas of HPC that are impacted or actively pursuing malleability concepts, from application developers to system architects, from programming model to system software researchers. The workshop will provide a lively discussion forum for researchers working in HPC and pursuing the concepts of and around malleability. Topics: --------- We are looking for original high-quality research and position papers on applications, services, and system software for malleable high-performance computing systems. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to: * System and system architecture considerations in designing malleable architectures. * Emerging software designs to achieve malleability in high-performance computing. * High-level parallel programming models and programmability techniques to improve applications malleability. * Run-time techniques to provide malleable execution models for computation, communication and I/O. * Resource management frameworks and interfaces supporting malleable scheduling, resource allocations and application execution. * Computing and I/O scheduling algorithms providing and/or exploiting static or dynamic malleability. * Use of AI and ML techniques to steer malleability in systems and applications. * Ad-hoc storage systems and I/O scheduling techniques helping I/O malleability. * Support for malleable execution of applications in performance, debugging and correctness tools. * Energy efficiency and malleability (applications, over-provisioned systems wrt. power/energy, storage systems, etc.). * Experiences and use cases applying malleability to HPC applications. Submission Guidelines ---------------------- Papers will be published together with ISC proceedings. We will allow both regular full page research papers (maximum 18 pages, including figures and references), as well as 8-9 page short or position papers, in order to cover both more mature approaches in the area as well as hot and novel concepts in their early stages. A Journal Special Issue will be published in The International Journal of High Performance Computing Applications (IJHPCA). The special issue will have an open CFP, but extended versions of the best papers accepted at HPCMALL 2022 will be invited for publication. All papers will undergo the usual peer-review process of IJHPCA. They are* * also an invaluable tool for high-end embedded computing to deal with * * real-time constraints. However, to reach such high scalability levels,* * extreme scale systems rely on heterogeneity, hierarchical memory * * subsystems, etc.Meanwhile, legacy programming and execution models, * * such as MPI and OpenMP, add asynchronous and data-driven constructs * * to their models, all the while trying to take into account the very * * complex hardware targeted by parallel applications. Consequently, * * programming and execution models, trying to combine both legacy * * control flow-based and dataflow-based aspects of computing, have also * * become increasingly complex to handle. Developing new models and their* * implementation, from the application programmer level, to the system * * level, down to the hardware level is key to provide better data- and * * event-driven systems which can efficiently exploit the wealth of * * diversity that composes current high-performance systems, for extreme * * scale parallel computing. In addition, Criteria 2 specifies that while achieving speedup is usually a desirable feature for an accelerated system, for the purpose of this special session, if the authors can demonstrate efficiency improvement in the resulting system A, then A may be up to 20% slower than B as a tradeoff. Submission to this special session includes 2 parts: - An 8-page technical paper describing research contributions. - A 1-page summary describing quantitatively the measured power and performance of the target system. The goal of the MODA workshop series is to provide a venue for sharing insight into current trends in MODA, to identify potential gaps, and offer an outlook into the future of the involved fields: high performance computing, databases, machine learning, and possible solutions that can contribute to the design and procurement of upcoming Exascale systems. === Important Dates Abstract submission: March 14, 2022 (AoE) Paper submission: March 21, 2022 (AoE) Author notification: April 18, 2022 Camera-ready: one month after June 02, 2022 MODA22 workshop: June 02, 2022, Hamburg, Germany === Goals While MODA is already a common practice at various HPC sites, each site adopts a different, insular approach, not always adopted in production environments, and mostly limited to the visualization of the system and building infrastructure metrics for health check purposes. In this regard, we observe a gap between the collection of operational data and its meaningful and effective analysis and exploitation, which prevents the closing of the feedback loop between the monitored HPC system, its operation, and its end-users. Under these premises, the goals of the MODA22 workshop can then be summarized in the following way: (1) Gather and share knowledge and establish a common ground within the international community with respect to best practices in monitoring and operational data analytics. (2) Discuss future strategies and alternatives for MODA, potentially improving existing solutions and envisioning a common baseline approach in HPC sites and data centers. (3) Establish a debate on the usefulness and applicability of AI/ML techniques on collected operational data for optimizing the operation of production systems (e.g., for practices such as predictive maintenance, runtime optimization, optimal resource allocation and scheduling). === Scope We seek novel research ideas that align with the above goals and match (see note below) the scope of the MODA workshop series: (a) Challenges, solutions, and best practices for monitoring systems at data centers and HPC sites. Significant focus will be placed on operational data collection mechanisms respectively: - covering different system levels, from building infrastructure sensor data to CPU-core performance metrics, and - targeting different end-users, from system administrators and operators to application developers, computer scientists, and computational scientists. (b) Effective strategies for analyzing and interpreting the collected operational data. Such strategies should particularly include (but are not limited to): - different visualization approaches and - machine learning-based techniques, potentially inferring knowledge of the system behavior and allowing for the realization of a proactive control loop. Note: New solutions proposed in the context of application performance modeling and/or application performance analysis tools fall outside the scope of MODA. Novel contributions in the area of compiler analysis, debugging, programming models and/or sustainability of scientific software are also considered out of the scope of the workshop. === Topics We cordially invite you to submit your contributions to the MODA22 workshop, in the form of short (6 pages) and full (12 pages) submissions, that address but are not limited to: * Monitoring and operational data analysis challenges and approaches (data collection, storage, visualization, integration into system software, adoption). * State-of-the-practice method, tools, techniques in monitoring at various HPC sites * Solutions for monitoring and analysis of operational data that work very well on large- to extreme-scale systems, with a large number of users. * Solutions that have proven limitations in terms of efficiency of operational data collection in real-time or in terms of the quality of the collected data. * Opportunities and challenges of using machine learning methods for efficient monitoring and analysis of operational data. * Integration of monitoring and analysis practices into production system software (energy and resource management) and runtime systems (scheduling and resource allocation). * Explicit gaps between operational data collection, processing, effective analysis, impactful exploitation; new approaches for closing these gaps for the benefit of improving HPC center planning, operations, and research. * Means to identify misuse, intentional or unintentional, of resources, and methods to mitigate the effects of these: taking automatic steps to contain the effects of one application/job/user allocation on others, supporting users to identify causes for the misbehavior of their application, linking to intrusion detection and safe multitenancy. * Concepts to integrate MODA into the system design at all levels, including dedicated hardware components, middleware features, and tool support that make ‘monitoring by default’ a viable option without sacrificing performance. * FAIR data practices, including sharing of monitoring workflows and tools across sites while ensuring compliance with GDPR regulations and user access agreements. === Submission and Publication All papers submitted to MODA22 must be original and not simultaneously submitted to another venue. All submissions will be peer-reviewed by the program committee members and accepted papers are expected to be presented during the workshop. Papers should be submitted through the EasyChair online system at https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=moda22. Despite the progress done in the field, the development of efficient algorithms for HPC systems with multiple forms of parallelism is still a challenging problem. More precisely, from an architectural point of view, a High-Performance Computing system can be described using a hybrid multi-level structure: at the highest level, there are several systems connected among them by geographic networks (System level); an intermediate level is composed by the nodes in a single system communicating among them through dedicated fast networks or high-performance switches (node level); at the lowest level, finally, there are several computing elements, computing cores as well as graphic accelerators, sharing resources in a single CPU (core level). These architecture levels have very different features, requiring different algorithmic development methodologies. For such a reason, the development of algorithms and scientific software for these systems implies a suitable combination of several methodologies to deal with the different kinds of parallelism corresponding to each architectural level. The general aim is to develop hybrid and hierarchical algorithms, able to be aware of the underlying platform. The main problems in this field are the management of large parallelism degrees due to several computing units, the heterogeneity of these devices, and the combination of several kinds of parallelism in a single algorithm. These topics are mainly investigated to gain the so-called exascale performance and, from another side, to face new forms of distributed computing as cloud and edge computing, as well as their interaction with HPC. This workshop focuses specifically on Models, Methodologies, Algorithms, and Environments to exploit all forms of parallelism and their combination at all levels in the emerging HPC systems to gather the current state of knowledge in the field. ======================================================= CALL FOR PARTICIPATION Interactive supercomputing for urgent decisions in crisis situation Virtual workshop https://www.dlr.de/sc/en/desktopdefault.aspx/tabid-7631/1638_read-76494/ ======================================================= When: Wednesday 23rd and Thursday 24th February Scope ===== Responding to disasters such as COVID-19, wildfires, hurricanes, extreme flooding, earthquakes, tsunamis, and accidents; technological advances are creating exciting new opportunities that have the potential to move HPC well beyond traditional computational workloads. Whilst HPC has a long history of simulating disasters, what’s missing to support emergency, urgent, decision making is fast, real-time acquisition of data and the ability to guarantee time constraints. The VESTEC project has been developing a software solution for enabling urgent decisions, supported by latest generation HPC and techniques, to be made by front-line responders. This is done on the basis of data records that are collected and evaluated in real time on supercomputers, making it possible to combine multiple data sources and efficiently extract essential functions. Thanks to interactive supercomputing, flexible and location-dependent planning is always possible and time-critical phenomena can be accurately depicted by means of 3D visualizations of the evaluated data. HPC is a critical enabler here if we can exploit future supercomputers appropriately, and through a mix of keynote and technical talks, demos, and a panel session, in this workshop we will be exploring the entire technology stack that is required to empower emergency services to make the correct decisions first time, every time.
